DO YOU THINK FLYING IS RISKY IN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF PGCY?

I am 4 weeks pregnant and was going to fly abroad (1hr flight then a 2 hr flight, each way) for two week holiday, but am now worried it might spoil the pregnancy. I'd be flying with my toddler, so not that peaceful...

I suppose I worry about lifting the suitcase / the toddler time and time again and not allowing implantation to happen.

I did miscarry at 5 weeks two months ago, so am thrilled I have conceived again so quickly but I want it to stay this time!

What would you do? D you think it is risky? Or am I being paranoid?

Thank you in advance.

I'm not long back from a week holibop, 4.5 hour flight each way, and I've just turned 10 weeks, so shouldn't be a problem!

Have a lovely time!

I was pregnant - but didn't know - when I went to the Caribbean over Christmas. Now 12 weeks PG and the baby seems fine!

Flew to NY when DS was 5 weeks, back when he was 6 weeks - all fine.

My best friend flew to London from NZ when her DD was probably just implanting - all fine too!

Hi caiobella19 quite a few girls see out the rest of their rosters if they feel up to it, it is tiring as you know! I am only 7 weeks and couldnt imagine doing one sector im so tired! Good luck with your training! Thats knackering at the best of times, isnt it. How far on will you be when you get your contract? x

ciaobella19 · 23/02/2010 21:38

oh god knows lol u know its organised chaos... was supposed to get it b4 the course...but not here yet. its permanent as well so they cant fire me can they?, especially if i dont do the SNY's?

sooooo worried as i just lost my job as crew due to it goin bust so so grateful to have this just so much to worry about lol.

il be 7 weeks next tuesday so hopefullyil get the contract b4 friday....weel see lol.
so does the airline actually let crew fly till end of published rosters or as soon as the know is that u grounded? never paid attention before lol.

worst time EVER! lol no im excited but just stressed

hope ur not feelin to sick jst now! xxxx

Hi caiobella19 i know what you mean with training courses and dates being chaos, no im pretty sure they cant take your contract off you. If your company is anything like mine (the worlds favorite LOL) it is written in out in flying crew orders to declare yourself pregnant as soon as you know, so you are grounded straight away. I hope it all works out. How are you feeling? Im 7 weeks today and feel slightly sick for the first time YUK. x

ciaobella19 · 26/02/2010 21:36

well i was 6 weeks on tuesday an yesterday an today felt horrendous omg! felt sooooo sick an fell asleep at the table :O not so good lol. still not got contracts..............cant tell them yet lol. so stressed. had to lift out one of them old style o/wing doors what a nightmare was soooo heavy i was petrified i dropped it on myself lol. how u feelin now? xxx

I got PG on holiday and then immediately started a secondment based in Dublin - I literally had a another suitcase in the car at Gatwick. I commuted 6 weeks before I realised - out on Mon am back Fri pm, then carried on for another 6 months before I complained to Occ Health that I could not stow my own case anymore and they put a stop to it.

It was hard for lots of reasons, but the flying never hurt dd, who is 6 in 2 weeks.

ciaobella19 · 26/02/2010 21:58

hmm thats reassuring...just loadsa stuff to worry about especially doing 4 flights a day 5 days a week...tad worrying (missin the long haul haha) xx

Ciaobella, I would have a little look into employment law, but I am fairly sure that any sniff of a dismissal because you are pregnant would bring the wrath of the law down on your employer. Is it worth a quick call perhaps to CAB?

I fly too (flight crew, again with world's favourite ) and grounded myself both times before I could fly again. I am not sure on the rules for cabin crew, but for flight crew you cannot fly once you know, and have to declare yourself grounded. You can carry out ground duties (I am doing something tedious on a computer from home. Oh how I wish I had a nice Caribbean tour instead!) In the first 5 weeks of my first pregnancy I flew to Entebbe twice and did 2 4-sector shorthaul days. Apart from bursting into tears when my bag got lost, I didn't have any adverse effects, on either me, my baby or my flying. (And I had to deal with 2 medical emergencies. People kept dying on my Entebbe flights )

Grounding of flight and cabin crew, as far as I can tell, is there as a protective measure all round. I don't think anyone has documented the effects on either a mother or foetus of flying regularly in the first few weeks. Also, the first 13 weeks are when everything is developing. There is also more risk of miscarriage in this time - an airline would not want to be in the position of having a miscarrying crew member on board. I think the airlines ground everyone so that there is no litigation case if they made you fly and something happened. According to CAA rules, pilots can fly in their second trimester subject to good health during pregnancy. My airline doesn't permit that though - it's only a matter of time before someone challenges it though.
