Hi everyone! In need of abit of reassurance and advice. I'm 32wks pg and have just been told I have to go for glucose tolerance tests due to slightly high blood sugar levels.
Has anyone else got experience of this and if so, what was the outcome? Have read abit about it on the net but would prefer to chat to any of you who's experienced/experiencing same thing. Thanks! x

Hi,

I am 32 + 3 today and I had to go for a Glucose Tolerance Test yesterday as baby is measuring large for dates. I am waiting on the results today so I am right there with you in regards to not knowing what to expect. As far as the test though, it was quite easy. I had to be at the hospital at 9 and after waiting for almost an hour I was brought in and they took my blood. I then had to drink a bottle of Lucozade and then sit in the waiting room for 2 hours. After that they took my blood again and that was it. I was told that if I don't receive a phone call today that means that all is well and so far I haven't heard anything (fingers crossed it will stay that way).

Hi,

I had gestational diabetes with my 2nd baby. i had my glucose test as my baby was meassuring 3 weeks ahead. if you do have it you will be monitored very well extra scans extra also they may indude you early. I had to change my diet which wasnt to bad unfortunetly no sweet stuff though. but you will have someone tell you all about what you can and cant have.

During the birth you will also be monitored very closely and after your baby is born they will do a blood test to see the sugar levels of the baby if they are a little low you will have to feed straight away which should bring them back up. I had to stay in 3 days in which they took numerous blood tests untill they were happy we could go.

hope that helps

good luck with your results

x

I had the GTT with two of my pregnancies, and didn't have gestational diabetes.

The test itself involves no more than drinking lucozade and sitting round so make sure you have a good book/ some company with you for it.

Thanks for the gd advice everyone! I'm measuring a couple of weeks ahead of dates and blood sugar is up so makes me think I may have Gestational diabetes the more I think about it. Also very tired (though know this v common in 3rd trimester anyway) and thirsty alot, so I guess will have to wait and see! Test not for a week yet so fingers crossed. :-) x Thanks xkatyx for telling me your story and glad yours seemed to be well managed and turned out ok. x

I had high sugar levels when they tested my blood first, was so worried that I refused to get a GTT, then when I saw the MW the next time she told me off and made me cry so then had one a couple of days later, and it was fine, had a nurse who was much nicer than the MW. I guess you shouldn't eat a massive bowl of frosties shortly before you get a blood sugar test.

I had GD in my 2nd pregnancy. It was diagnosed fairly early on and I ended up on insulin. If left untreated, it can result in a big baby.

I worked very hard to control my blood sugar through diet and exercise. Consequently I lost quite a bit of weight and ended up smaller at the end than I did at the beginning.

I ended up with a VBAC and a baby weighing 7 pounds 12 so not huge at all! In hindsight it was the best thing that could have happened to me as I have continued with the diet and exercise and have gone from asize 20 pre pregnancy to a size 12/14 9 months on.

Thanks for advice again guys! I guess I'll just have to wait and see after Thurs. My first two daughters were nearly 8lb and nearly 9lb so on the larger size. I was about an average size 14 pre pregnancy and have put on about 1.5 stone so far so not hugely excessive. (Always get a sweet tooth during pregnancy though so have indulged in the odd pud, though not what I'd call excessively!) wonder if a few sweets before blood test would've made a difference?!!..lol.
