It started with a v nasty cold. Really painful at the top of my nose with bright yellow snot and can't breathe through my nose at all.... any advice welcomed on natural ways to fix this.

If I don't take any medication is it likely to go away or get worse (never had it)

ergh, I feel your pain....I had this before Christmas.

Sinusitis is a bacterial infection and if your snot is yellow then it sounds like it's infected! It's treatable with antibiotics - amoxycillin - which is safe in pregnancy. Get yourself a dr appt and get rid of it! In the meantime steaming your face and also gentle massage of the face can relieve it.

just to add, I've spoken to my mum (mum's are great, aren't they?!) and she's recommended something called NeilMed Sinus Rinse. I've had a quick google and it's apparently ok in pregnancy and you should be able to get it in Boots or a local pharmacy

Poor you! I had sinusitis too at 5 weeks - was loathe to take anything, but blooming hell its painful isnt it? Thought my face was going to explode! Dr. gave me amoxycillin and I started to feel better after a couple of days and back to normal a week later. Hope you start to feel better soon!

hi city, sorry to hear you are suffering with horrible sinusitis. As already has been suggested here, Sinus Rinse works well, but if it is badly infected, then it is probrably a job for antibiotics.

I find a hot/warm facecloth across the bridge of the nose/forehead, helps with the discomfort. And steam helps relieve the congestion.

Hope you feel better soon.

you can buy menthol crystals from any chemist/supermarket. Put a couple of these in the bowl when you are steaming they are fab. Shut your eyes though or they can make them sting.

great advice...i am currently 6+2 and got terrible sinusitis too...is it an early preg symptom then or are we all just very unlucky??

WickedWitchSouthWest · 22/01/2010 19:44

it's a bad time of year for it! Also, as we have so much extra blood in our systems, it makes the inside of the nose and all the little passages more swollen than normal so you get a little bit of an infection and it's twice as bad as it should be!

cityangel · 22/01/2010 22:11

thank you for your advice... so helpful. I left work at lunchtime as I couldn't cope with the pain.

The doctor has given me amoxycillin as its very sore and when I lean forward it really hurts.

I haven't taken it yet as I am paranoid about any drugs. I have an early scan next Friday (privately) as I am really worried I don't have enough symptoms

if it gets worse or doesn't sort itself out then I will take it.... perhaps this does count as a pregnancy symptom!

cityangel dont put up with the pain you dont need to. i had 3 lots of amoxycillin while pregnant. i had kidney infections so had to take it but everything was fine. i had sinusitus last week and the antibiotics worked within days. i suffered for 4 weeks before taking these and probably would of suffered the pain until i took them. good luck and hope you get rid of it soon

I got this at the beginning of each of my pregnancies. Also what can help is using a saline nasal spray. You can buy one at the chemist or if you can manage it (bit tricky I think) you could just make up salt water & try & sniff it. It's a bit of a weird sensation but does work at helping clear your nasal passages.

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 23/01/2010 20:34

This cleared up my sinusitis
www.boots.com/en/Sterimar-Microspray-100ml_9333/

but I wouldn't hesitate to take the antibiotics if you think its getting worse.

cityangel · 23/01/2010 21:53

yes I tried the Sterimar but then the pain got too much and when only lying in bed all day slightly eased it I started taking the antibiotics and 1 lot of paracetomol am feeling a bit better already. Thanks for all your support
