Will mw take blood at booking appointment?

The reason i ask is that i am very difficult to get blood from. I usually get passed around until eventually someone gets lucky and finds a vein. My booking appointment is being done at home and im worried that mw wont be able to get blood if she needs to.

Yes, they do. I suppose if she can't find a vein she'll ask you to come in for an appointment on another day for someone else to try. Try not to worry, I'm sure it happens to other people too!

sometimes not - depends if she is allowed to transport the tubes!

Warm yourself up before it needs taking. and drink loads.

At my booking in appointment the midwife just told me to make an appointment to have bloods taken,a nurse did mine,my midwife didn't come out to see me though so don't know if that makes any difference

Mine did, but it may vary between pcts. They want to find out blood type and Rhesus factor and screen for HIV and a heap of other stuff. I guess if she wants to get blood and can't she will refer you to a blood taking type bod? I wouldn't worry.

my mw gave me the forms for blood testing but the actual samples were taken by the phlebotomist in the blood testing dept.

Mine had a look at my arm and didn't even attempt to put a needle near - I don't appear to have very willing veins! Every time I've needed bloods taken I've been to the phlebotomists instead. Far easier than being passed about from pillar to post

i would insist on someone who knows how to get blood from tricky veins do it, they pain that you have to go through is not nice, when last bloods were taken they took it from back of hand bigger veins then in my arm!

Good luck they tend to like taking blood like you dont need it!

As someone above said - drink lots of water, they couldn't get blood out of me at my booking appointment (midwife and dr tried, and ended up with bruising on both arms, and only some of the tests were able to be done that week). If they cant manage then, she can try the next time, and giving them blood gets alot easier during pregnancy for whatever reason, so it was fine the next time.

I explained to my midwives, each time, that I would prefer to go to the clinic at the hospital, as I am difficult to get blood from, and have developed a bit of a phobia about the whole process. They were all fine about it, gave me the forms and I went and had them done in my own time. Just be honest with the MW and explain.

thanks for all your responses. I will mention it to my mw and see if she can refer me as i really dont want bruised arms again!

I didn't have blood taken at my initial booking appointment, they took it at my 12 week scan appointment. I wouldn't have thought they'd take blood at your home tbh. I have the same problem with blood tests......mw told me I have "pathetic little veins" Thanks!! I always end up having to have it taken from the back of my hand, which not all mw's and nurses are willing to do cos they haven't done it before. It's a real pain having to get sent to the hospital for it too!
