Hello all,

A bit new to this so forgive me if I'm doing anything wrong.

I had my 38 week midwife appointment yesterday and was told my fundal heightis 6cm bigger than it should be. My midwife was a bit shocked and was shocked when I informed her my gestational diabetes test came back fine (recently had to change midwife).

I was told that shewas just going tomonitor me, but has only made and apointment for 40 weeks. This has all really worried me andshe didn't really tell me much other than she will measure me again at my 40 weeks appointment and decide what to do then. I havesince made another appointment for 39 weeks as I am a bit stressed about it. Has anyone else been through this or isgoing through this? What were your experiences?

Thanks

I think if you're measuring more than 2cm over they're supposed to send you for a growth scan (that's what it says at the bottom of the fundal height chart in my notes in any case......) I think you've done the right thing making an appointment for 39 weeks. I would try not to worry unduly though - these measurements are notoriously inaccurate and it doesn't mean you're going to have a massive baby!

I measured big in my last pregnancy, went for a growth scan only to be told "I don't understand why they've sent you, everything is fine" by the sonographer.

I agree I've been told 2cm either way is considered normal and more than that you are usually sent for a scan. I'm measuring 'just' over 2cm but wasn't sent for scan.
I think scans can still be inaccurate but at least then they can see if it is fluid that is making you 'big' or whether it is baby.
I'm hoping for VBAC this time so getting a bit twitchy at the thought of a big baby.
2 weeks seems like a long time to wait to be seen again at this late stage in the game. I think you are right to make another appointment for next week.

How tall are you? I suddenly measured large for dates at 36 weeks and went for a growth scan - they took lots of measurements and according to those everything was fine. I was told it was probably because I am short so was all out front and DD could have been in a strange position when the measurement was done.

Should add that DD was 2 weeks late and weighed 9lb7oz though!

Hope everything is ok.

heya i was measuring big, not sure how much though but big enough that the birth centre did not want me to give birth there anymore.
we did not have a scan to conform anything.
babe was born 7 pounds exactly.

I could have written your post!!

I saw the mw yesterday - 38+4 weeks pg with dc2. The mw measured me as 42 weeks! She said 'Im not very good at this' and tried again. She got it down a bit.

Im not that bothered TBH. The baby is always in awkward positions and sometimes her bum is in the middle of my bump which makes it look huge.

You are doing the right thing in going back next week if you are worried

mad4mainecoons · 20/01/2010 21:07

Me too!

my MW measured me yesterday im 33+5 and measuring 37

i asked if it would be a problem considering im going for a homebirth and she said not at all, as the measurements were really subjective and she only took them to check that the baby was growing and not to worry about the numbers for a second.

she also said that the measurements can change if the baby moves into a different position.

i asked about growth scans etc. and she said no need, stop worrying

hope that helps.

I measured big for dates with both my boys - had extra scan and gestational diabetes test with DS1 but all fine.

They were both 9lbers (and long) and both back-to-back so I think it was partly the position they were in.

Measuring the fundal height is definitely not an exact science and I would try not to worry too much about it.

Hi everyone,

I'm glad I found this thread tonight. I'm 31 + 2 and had my MW appt this morning. We talked a bit about reduced fetal movement and I was sent for a scan this afternoon. At the MW this morning she measured me as 30 1/2 cm but when I went for the scan the sonographer measured baby's head & stomach and stomach was measuring the size of a baby at 35 weeks. I am now being sent for a gestational diabetes test next Wednesday. I am scared and very worried. Reading these posts has made me feel a bit better but I can't help but feel that this is something I have brought on myself and baby.

Not really sure what I'm looking for, just some reassurance really.

Sorry for the thread hijack OP.

I had my DD 4 months ago. I was told through out my pregnancy that I was big for dates and was sent for growth scans every month.

At every scan they told me that the baby was way above the 'normal' size range for my gestation.

At 38 weeks they told me she was at about 11lbs and decided to induce me because they were worried that I would have problems delivering her if she got much bigger.

When she was born she was.....7lbs exactly!

Not exactly the sumo baby they predicted.

And to add insult to injury the induction really didn't go well and I ended up having an emergency c/s anyway!

I'm in the same position as you, I went for my 36 weeks appointment yesterday and I'm Measuring 5cm bigger, when she told me I cried! My son was 8lb 12oz so I am panicking The Dr reviewed me and has sent me for a growth scan which I am having this evening, I let you know what they say.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 22/01/2010 13:10

I was measuring too big and booked for a growth scan. I had had one previously and all was fine so I didn't really want to go again.

The day before he wasn't moving so I went to hospital. The next day I went in early for monitoring and then had my scan a couple of hours later.

Big red flag and baby born by emergency section. Turns out I had polyhydromnious.

My advice fwiw is to keep an eye on movements and go to hospital for monitoring if they change in any way - ie to less movements or to more.
