Painful pubic area?

Hmm, this is a bit embarrassing, but for the last week or so, I feel a bit like I've been hit in the pubic area. I'm 29+5 with my first, so am not quite sure if this is normal or not. I'm fine when I'm sat down, but when I walk around I feel a constant kind of throb in my knicker area. I pushed a door open with my foot yesterday and that reallllllllly made things hurt! I'm starting to worry that this could be the start of SPD? I really hope not. Could it just be due to the fact that baby is currently breech? Or is it just one of those things that happens during pregnancy?

I had this with both my babies, it felt like someone kicked me right in the bone bit down there .. i never had SPD, i does get a little more tender towards end as the baby gets bigger, i think maybe it's just the pressure .. my midwife said it was fine.

hope that helps :-)

Amy, This is how my SPD started out. Sorry Maybe try to get to a physio or chiropractor/osteopath - the cheapest or free one first, really important not to do anything that hurts you, and rest rest rest. My midwife told me that the pain was normal and I actually kept on walking etc for weeks thinking 'oh yes, midwife says normal so I will keep on going' but it got to the stage where I couldn't get out of bed or turn over without massive pain, so I think better to be safe and get checked out than not.
There's a thread on here named something like SPD lounge/couch - has lots of tips and experience xxx good luck

Yep, sorry this is how my SPD started. It never got really bad though but if you can get help with it now it'd be a good idea.

hoops997 · 20/01/2010 17:17

hiya amy, I have this too and it looks like it's the start of SPD, have got an appointment to see a physio soon and just hope that it's not going to get any worse, as can hardly bloody walk!!!

Do you find it hard and painful to turn over in bed? I find it's murder!!

Oh the joys, how are you getting on otherwise?

TheChewyToffeeMum · 20/01/2010 17:20

That is how my SPD started too - don't try to push things with your foot again, it will hurt! Definitely worth telling your midwife about it as she can refer you for physio. If you are careful (basically don't do anything that requires you to open your legs!)it might not get much worse.

echops · 20/01/2010 17:35

I have this too and have been told it's SPD. Don't panic - it doesn't necessarily mean you'll end up on crutches (I'm now 34 weeks and still slowly pottering about). Just be careful, sit down when putting on trousers, keep legs together when getting in/out of car and rolling over in bed. Also ask midwife to refer you to local physio dept.

verylittlecarrot · 20/01/2010 18:10

Me too, probably SPD but I think mild compared to many women, so you may not get worse. I feel like I have walked into the corner of a table and badly bruised my pubic bone. I second the 'keeping your legs together' advice to minimise ouchyness.

Ilovebagsandbruuuce · 20/01/2010 19:36

I had this too! Felt really bruised in that area and got worse if i walked even short distances. I couldn't turn over in bed or cross my legs without it hurting. Whilst I had this, baby was breech but as soon as it turned at 36 weeks, the bruised/sore/pain feeling disappeared for me. Am thinking mine was due to being kicked 'down there' so much. Hope yours gets better soon!

PennyScotia · 20/01/2010 19:44

Hi, I've had this since about 25 weeks (now 31) and it hasn't really got much worse despite my bump now being much bigger and my weight going up. My GP told me that there wasn't much point in going to physio and recommended gentle swimming (haven't tried this as I don't have a local public pool but I've heard it can help - just don't do breaststroke).

I also spoke to my yoga teacher (who is a physio) and she recommended sleeping on my side with a rolled up single duvet (I use two pillows) under one knee to take pressure off the hip underneath. It seems to help - I'm much less sore after a night where I've not knocked the pillows out of the bed. I don't wear high heels, cross my legs, or attempt to put shoes and socks on standing up all of which are painful.

June2009 · 20/01/2010 19:48

dont worry toooo much about SPD, I had it for my 1st (and only so far) pregnancy and really got it under control with exercises the physio gave me (mainly pelvic floor exercises to strenghten the whole area).
get referred to an obstetrics physio by the GP (or midwife).
the first midwife I saw said they couldn't refer me and that i had to see the GP, the GP gave me a ltter of referral to give the midwife (?) she just took the paper and put it in my notes and then referred me to the "proper" obstetrics physio.
went to the physio, turned out she was just a regular physio but knew about spd and really helped. I saw her a few times.

before i saw the physio though spd got so bad sometimes I would just stay upstairs all day because going down meant going back up at some point and that was too painful.
don't wait. mine started just after the anomaly scan (whenever that was, 20 weeks I think?)

amyboo · 21/01/2010 08:04

Blimey - seems like I'm not alone then! I slept with a cushion between my knees last night and that definitely seemed to help, and it's not so bad this morning. I'm normally a regular swimmer, but haven't been for a couple of weeks as I didn't have a maternity swimsuit! Am off to the pool on Saturday morning, so will see if that helps... I'll definitely speak to my gynae about it when I see him in 2 weeks.

I had pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (the new name for SPD!) myself. Hope you get to see a physio soon. Mine gave me a great leaflet with lots of information and suggestions, here it is online .

rumpleteaser · 22/01/2010 10:28

Ooh I clicked on this thread because I have those pains too, I didn't connect it with SPD. Also 1st pregnancy here, 27 wks.
I think I'll get the pregnancy yoga book out and look for a giant swimsuit while I wait to get to the docs.
amyboo let us know what happens and what helps for you.
