Underwired bas - why not?

I know everyone says dont wear underwired bras in pregnancy, but why not?? What does it actually do?
I wore them first preg and didnt second time, breastfed for a year after each & ended up with very small saggy boobs both times.. This time I want to maximise that pregnancy cleavage but feel vaguely guilty for buying underwired ... anyone??

I wore an underwired bra during my first pregnancy, until about 24 weeks when my breasts suddenly got big and the bra very uncomfortable. I suppose that is why you are not supposed to wear them.

TBH if it is a well fitting bra, with the wire flat against your chest rather then against breast tissue, and the wire doesn't cut in anywhere, I don't see the problem.

saggy boobs are unavoidable for some women during pregnancy unfortunately, nothing to do with breastfeeding according to research.

Lubyloo · 20/01/2010 08:34

I used to work for Mothercare and we were always told that the wire could press on milk ducts and cause problems breastfeeding.

Morning ladies,

Im 38+5 and recently went to Bravissimo to get properly measured and to invest in a couple of decent nursing bra's.

The lady who measured me actually said you CAN wear underwired bra's during pregnancy as long you are fitted properly!

Thanks for your comments, that's really helpful. It makes sense logically that if they're not digging into anything they cant damage you...
Belgo - I know pregnancy can leave you saggy wether you BF or not, I just meant that if theyre going to be saggy anyway why not enjoy being buxom while it lasts...
I might have to go on a little shopping trip...

I wore them both pgnancies - until boobs got (for me) rather big - and I managed to bf both times. As belgo says, if wire agst rib cage rather than digging into boob I don't see the problem. However bfing definitely did affect my boobs - DD2 had marked preference, despite all my efforts, for one side and that side definitely slightly bigger but also saggier after bfing her - not two pregnancies, but bfing her.

The old wives tale is that under-wired bras damage your milk ducts. I was worried about this but lots of helpful MNetters said so longer as you're properly measured at somewhere good on bigger/ maternity bras like Bravissimo and you always wear a good fit you'll be fine -good advice I think!

MrsKitty · 20/01/2010 09:46

Agree with previous posters - as long as you're fitted regularly and properly you can wear wires - may mean you have to buy bras more regularly though. I was told this by a reputable and reliable fitter (i.e. not mothercare, M&S or Debenhams)

Thank you bird & Mrs Kitty.
makes sense really - wires arent near your milk ducts are they?
Where do you suggest for proper fitting then? M & S is no good ? John lewis ? Rigby & peller - dont want to spend a fortune when likely to be changing size a few times..

recommend Bravissimo or Leia if there's one near you. Have heard positive stories from John Lewis but not been measured there myself.

M&S measured me as a 44D, Mothercare as a 42E both of which felt & looked awful, then both Bravissimo & Leia advised 38G and I've not looked back since! My boobs are actually where they're meant to be - without a wire too
