Thrush during pregnancy?

Has anyone had really bad thrush during pregnancy? I have been on NHS Direct and the advice is to speak to your doctor or midwife, rather than getting some over-the-counter Canisten.

Any ideas?

My midwife suggested using live yogurt instead although I never got round to trying it as my bout was quite mild and seems to have cleared up by itself! Might be worth a try if it's driving you crazy though...

She never suggested Canisten so I don't know if it contains something harmful - probably best to check!

Hope that brings you some relief

Canestan is fine to use during pregnancy, I've used it during every pregnancy, just be careful administering it.

I suffered from recurring thrush for years (basically, I almost always had an infection). Naturally this gets worse during pg. Last time I gave up on my dr who just prescribed me more Canestan pessaries but never gave me advice about WHY I always had an infection and how to get rid of it. I saw a nutritionist who told me that yeast feeds on sugar and to cut all refined sugar and refined carbs out of my diet. This makes sense considering that sugar is necessary in breadmaking to feed the yeast, so it's the same principle. There are ridiculously stringent "thrush" diets out there which practically prohibit your eating anything other than raw veggies, but I found that following the advice about sugar made a huge difference for me, left me comfortable, and had an easy delivery with no thrush infection for the baby.

I used the canesten cream and pessary during my pregnancy. It was fine. Just don't use the applicator for the pessary so it doesn't go too far up!

Brilliant advice vitapulchra!

I've had a pretty constant infection through this pg and found Canesten didn't do a lot (TheCalvert - don't pay for it over the counter - use your free prescripton if you do give it a go!). I found that using tea tree oil in the bath, and applied directly to the ahem...'outside areas' helped relieve the symptoms, but didn't solve the problem long term.

The sugar thing definitely makes sense, and fits with my general food philosophy so I'll definitely be trying this - thanks for the tip!

I get this a lot, and have had a few bouts during this pregnancy. I have a terrible sweet tooth and (inbetween all the veggies of course) I've been craving cans of ice-cold Pepsi and Dairy Milk... have tried my best to cut right down on the sugar and carbs lately and it seems to be clearing up by itself.

I had repeated thrush earlier in this pregnancy that caniston pessary and cream did not cure. After two trips to GP was prescribed TWO courses of pessary (3 days with, three day gap then 3 days of pessary again) and cream for 10 ten PLUS 10 days of cream for DH to use on his bits and that cleared it up! ALthough men don't get symptoms it can live on their bits and i think we were passing it back and forth during (rare, thrush free) sex. Hope that helps - i am so pleased to be rid of it, made me really miserable. Good luck
