DVT with first pregnany - advice on planning second

I had a DVT at 9 weeks with my first pregnancy and injected clexane 2x a day for the rest of the pregnancy. It was my second DVT. (I have been tested for thrombaphilia etc and I dont have any of the disorders apparently).

DD is 2 now and I am vaguely thinking about getting pregnany again and wondered if anyone with a similar experience could tell me about how it went with pregnancy no 2? Did you go on Clexane before getting pregnant/how was this managed/were you referred to heamatology before getting pregnant, or just once you had conceived?

Any info gratefully received.

you sound like me

have had DVT/thrombophlebitis and been affected with both pregnancies

i took clexane during both and warfarin for 6 weeks post partum

I was automatically classed as a high risk PG,which meant i had to fight for my water birth but i did get it

as part of my overall plan of care i saw a hematologist, anesthetist and a consultant but only once i had conceived

I had clexane every day from as soon as I knew I was PG - I just went to the GP and got it prescribed, although it helped that I had a letter from the haematologist who did the thrombophilia screen which said how much I would need and confirmed I would need it straight away.

I carried on with the clexane for 6 weeks post-partum rather than swapping over to warfarin as it meant less frequent blood tests.

Good luck! I had no problems in my second pg at all.

Thanks rubyslippers. You did well to get a water birth - i was induced and hooked up like half woman/half robot with DD!

Yes - care including hematologist, anesthetist and a consultant sounds v similar.

Was just wondering whether to make an appointment with my GP to discuss and see if they refer you in advance - which i think, is something the Consultant talked about at the time doing for the next time. Our GP isnt very helpful with such things though as they refuse to do family planning at the practice.

oh i had to fight for it and they only signed it off at 38 weeks!

i would speak to your GP and explain your concerns so you can get things moving

i meant to also say, both births will brill and both babies healthy and lovely

thanks for reassurances - I well rememeber how worried I was throughout, so its good to hear success stories, esp of second pregnancies. x

Ah yes, this is coming back now. I did just as you are considering - made an appointment with the GP to say that I was going to start TTC, and make sure they knew about my medical history and what would be required.

I also took calcium tablets as recommended by my GP as there can occasionally be some problems with long term clexane use and osteoporosis (although much better than some of the blood thinning drugs they used in the past).

They seemed quite relaxed about me having DD2 in the 'home from home' part of the unit when it came to it, but she was too quick even for that and arrived in the car at the side of the road. Very straightforward and no bleeding problems afterwards despite natural third stage. I had luckily packed my own clexane syringe to do 6 hours after the birth as they didn't seem set up with any to give me!
