Sweep!! are they really a horrible as i imagine?

Are sweeps really horrible. I really want to go naturally as friends say they are not very nice. Any comments and experiences?

I had 3 sweeps before DS as born. I could hardly feel the first one, less than a smear test. The 2nd and 3rd though were completely different and shot me through the roof! Labour had started but very slowly and mildly so maybe that had something to do with it?
