Which sling - moby, kari-me or close?

I want to try a nice sling this time round, but it's a mice field!!

I think I'll use it more in the first few months so really want one suitable for a newborn.

I'm happy to learn how to tie it, if necessary, as long as it's not too complicated.... Definitely want a strechy one as they look a lot easier.

So, have sort of narrowed it down to the moby, kari me or close.... Which do you think is the best? Or do you have other suggestions?

TIA

I quite like the idea of a mice field.

The Moby and Kari-Me are identical. I don't know about the other one. THe Moby does seem to come in more colours, though.

We have a Kari-Me, which was invaluable in the first three months (invaluable to the point that you would have had to prise it from my cold, dead hands). We then switched to the Ergo at about 4 months and STILL use it, DD 22 months. The Ergo is fantastic so if you are economizing and don't think you can get both I'd look in to the Ergo with infant insert. However both was worth every penny for us. I used one of them every day. In the snow I've been wishing that I was not 30 weeks pregnant because I could carry DD in the Ergo on my back very easily!

Also, because of my Ergo evangelism, and friends trying it out, 6 friends got it...it really is that good. When I see people struggling to carry their heavier children in a Bjorn I want to help them see the light. The best part is that you get all the ease of carrying that you had for the first few months for long afterwards. I often took DD to town in the bus at 11 or 12 months for a long outing in the Ergo as it was much easier.

Other people have different experiences with the wrap sling and may be stronger but I found that after 4-5 months I was more comfortable in the Ergo.

By the way, if my dh can tie the wrap sling, ANYONE can!

Sorry don't know, but if you have one of these near you you might be able to go along and try each out before you decide: www.slingmeet.co.uk/

I had a Kari-me and loved it. The only problem comes when you're trying to wrap 30 feet of stretchy fabric around yourself in a rainy car park and the ends are traling around in the wet, but once on they're soooo comfy (for the wearer and the child, as far as I could tell). I tried my sister's Baby Bjorn once and hated it, all the weight gets dragged down through your shoulders and it's really uncomfy - and my DD was a light baby.
Haven't tried the others so can't comment but a definite YES to the Kari-me, looking forward to using it again in 3 months .

mrsjuan · 14/01/2010 10:25

Moby is slightly shorter than the kari me which might sway your decision if you are on the small side. I found it excellent and used it every day until my DD was about 5 months when we moved onto a mei tai(she's tiny though). If you're going out in the car you can just tie it on before you go and put your baby in when you get to our destination.

I am quite tempted by the ergo now though

Another vote for the Kari-Me followed by the Ergo when baby gets bigger. Used these with DS2 and wished someone had enlightened me when I had DS1.

DD1 is 10 days old and I put the Kari-me on for first time yesterday. Spent the rest of the afternoon commenting to DH how fab the Kari-me is!

thisisyesterday · 14/01/2010 10:41

moby moby moby moby moby!!!!!!

turtle23 · 14/01/2010 10:43

Hate the Moby. Too wide. Kari-me is fab.

raindroprhyme · 14/01/2010 10:43

i have a Kari -me for me. A ring sling for DH and a pouch for the glove box of the car.

Trick with the Kari me is to put it on when you get dressed in the morning then you can just pop bubba in and out as necessary. saves trailing wet ends in soggy car parks.

Moby wasn't long enough for DH but as he prefers ring sling i may invest in some different colours of moby for me. Also moby is meant to be better in warm weather where as Kari me is cosy cosy.

turtle23 · 14/01/2010 10:45

Forgot to say Close is quite good for out and about as it doesn't trail on the ground. Doesn't feel as secure though.

Poledra · 14/01/2010 10:49

I loooooved my Close sling - got it for DD3 but so wish I'd had it for the other 2 DDs. We had a Baby Bjorn but that dragged on my shoulders terribly, as someone else commented. I used a lot, even in the house, as DD3 slept well in it and it left my hands free to get on with things with the other two.

DH hated the Close but then he liked the Baby Bjorn, so we can confidently discount his opinion.

Hug-a-Bub

Morloth · 14/01/2010 10:50

LOL at mice field!

I used a hugabub (which I think is the same as a Kari-me?).

Loved it, used it well up until he was 3 (if we were out and he got tired - or if he was sick) and then switched over to an Ergo back carry for hikes etc.

Have just washed my old hugabub and popped in baby bag and I have a new one coming as well. As I don't have a car/buggy this time I figure one in the wash/one to wear is the way forward.

It seriously became part of my wardrobe. Would get dressed and put the hugabub over the top, so if needed to whack DS in, just tightened it up and off we went.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 14/01/2010 10:51

What if (1) you have huge norks -- does that matter? And (2) you have a very big baby?

With DS, we bought a Baby Bjorn Active 'cos he was so big, but he never liked it much and I found my norks felt sort of in the way. We used it a bit, but I could never go farther than the local shops without bringing the buggy along for backup. Either DS would get antsy after 20 mins, or I'd be getting really weighed down and uncomfortable.

I don't want to write of slings totally and the Ergo sounds really good, but then again, lots of people said last time that the BB Active was just what we needed ...

MrsMattie · 14/01/2010 10:52

I loved my Moby wrap sling at first, but only used it for the first two months in the 'newborn hold'. I found it annoying after that.No matter how well i wrapped it, it would start to slip and loosen and feel uncomfortable. But for those first weeks it was delicious!

Lionstar · 14/01/2010 10:53

Love my Moby, but you do have to put it on at home and wear for rest of day - it isn't easy to put on in car parks, and doing it in a cafe becomes quite a spectator sport! Once it's on though it's fab and DS is really happy and very cosy, even in this weather.

I have a Connecta to move on to when he is big enough.

Poledra · 14/01/2010 10:53

When my milk came in with DD3, I was a 34 H, Dorothea, and I still loved my Close - is that helpful?

Morloth · 14/01/2010 10:53

34FFs here Doreathea the good part about the hugabub is that it is totally adjustable and has a bit of stretch. DH used to sigh and wish he could get in cause DS would be all snuggled up to my boobs.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 14/01/2010 10:55

Wow, fast responses! I am 34GG now (24 weeks pg) so yes, those are relevant posts, thank you!

roary · 14/01/2010 11:00

Positioning of Ergo does not squash norks, even in front carry mode. It is also more airy than the wrap sling - we switched over from Kari Me on hols in Singapore, where the wrap sling was too sweaty for both of us.

Baby Bjorn Active = rubbish. My theory on the Bjorns is that people rave about them in the first few weeks because it's so convenient to be able to carry your baby, without realizing that there are better ways to carry your baby! Then they persuade all their friends to purchase, only to find out a couple weeks later that it's UNCOMFORTABLE. you could probably carry a newborn around with a tea towel and have it be comfortable.

We used ours twice and then switched. You are not properly hands-free with it the way you are with the Ergo or a wrap sling and the fact that the baby dangles from the crotch seems to make it very uncomfortable for the parent (god knows how the baby likes it!)

Someone before mentioned sling meet for trying slings out before you buy. I have to say I have yet to meet anyone who does not love their Ergo to the point of obsession.

TeddyBare · 14/01/2010 11:01

I have a Kari-me and absolutly love it. I litreally put it on first thing in the morning, on top of my pjs in the first couple of weeks days before I could be bothered to get dressed, and wear sling with or without dd all day (mostly with dd I hasten to add). I didn't find the knots too difficult even in my sleep deprived state when I first got it. When dd was newborn it seemed to help her relax. I loved it because it meant I had my hands free to eat cake and read. I can't recommend it enough.

MrsBadger · 14/01/2010 11:04

you are quite right re teatowel - I carried dd in a pashmina for nearly a week till the pouch I'd ordered arrived

DorotheaPlenticlew · 14/01/2010 11:04

Right, I'm inspired to investigate these properly; we can prob sell our BB to some unsuspecting more suitable user on eBay as it's hardly used at all.

Will show thread to DP. Am excited at possibility of finding a sling we actually like!

Morloth · 14/01/2010 11:05

Pashmina very useful if you find yourself slingless with a tired baby/toddler.

blinder · 14/01/2010 11:21

seriously considering buying an Ergo as a result of this thread .

I use a Moby (and love it) but it's a bit fiddly for back-carrying.

I also use a Bjorn but only for getting DD to sleep as a last resort. You can unclip it so easily and put her straight down without waking her up.

Great link btw VeronicaCake
