Exxposure to pneumonia whilst pregnant...

A relative of mine has been hospitalised with pneumonia. I am 32 weeks pregnant and have been to visit him twice before he was diagnosed as having pneumonia, they thought it was something completely different.

I have since read that it can be contagious. Does anyone know if there is any risk to myself and the baby? Should I be staying away?

I currently have pneumonia, came out of hospital on Monday, and haven't been told it is contagious, or to stay away from anybody.

In the hospital the doctors and nurses wore masks initially until they could confirm it wasn't swine flu (it wasn't) and once they knew that the masks came off.

There are a few different types of pneumonia - do you know which it is?

Ah I see... Not sure what type it is i'm afraid, think i'll have to ring the ward and try to find out. Just been for a midwife check up and I asked her and she said the same, depends what type it is...

It really does depend on what type of pneumonia it is. Commonly pneumonia is caused by viruses or bacteria. Viral pneumonia like any other viral illness is contagious whereas bacterial pneumonia is not. There are also many other types that are rarer, some of which may be contagious. If you are unsure it may be better to stay away.

Ah thanks, I really do need to find out what type it is, hope the docs let us know soon.. Don't want to stay away if I don't have to.
