Elective C-Section at 38+1 .... Anyone ?

Hi all,

Well after my post about being scared about my forthcoming ECS I have calmed a little about the actual procedure, I am now worried about the date that they have booked me in for.

I am a bit funny about dates as my due date is 2 days before my DS's birthday (ds passed away due to a birth accident a week after birth) and 39 weeks which is when they would normally to an ECS is ds due date so that is also potentially emotionally fraught.

So at consultant meeting I explained all this and she said that they prefer to go to 39w as its better for baby's breathing and was quite sure about that. Then after some confusion about trying to get me in for a day or two early we booked a date (as it turns out using last years calender) and it is only 38+1 which is a bit earlier that anticipated. I have now been referred to the consultant who operates on a friday so if I change the date I will have to see a different consultant.

Anyway, just wondered if any of you had had an ECS at 38w and if there were any problems?

Hi,

I had mine at 38+4 but they were looking to do it bang on 38 weeks. It was fine and routinely they do them at 38 weeks (before 39 weeks) at my hospital. For CS purposes full term is 38 weeks (37 for normal deliveries) so your baby is full term by then.

Hope this helps.

It is better to go to 39 weeks as there is less chance of breathing problems in the baby - that week can make quite a bit of difference. Hence now most hospitals try to schedule c-sections in for 39 weeks.

I had ds2 by c-section at 37 weeks (went into labour but was booked for c-section) and he did have breathing problems and had a week in NICU.

Its difficult but I would personally go as near as possible to 39 weeks.

Good luck and sorry to hear about your DS

My DD1 was born naturally at 36+4 and she had no probs at all. Weighed 6lbs 4oz if that's any help? Had DD2 as elective c-section at 39 weeks and she was also fine 7lbs 3oz.

Hi there my little one was born 38+2 by elec section, was also fine though they prefer to wait til 39 weeks, i was already in labour. best of luck for you.

I am booked in for an elective this Friday and I will be 38 + 5. I thought this was quite early too but the consultant said it was fine. My biggest worry now is getting to the hospital in all this snow!

My hospital wanted to get as close to 40 weeks as possible but I was very nervous about going into labour.
I ended up having ECS at 38+5 and all was fine. Not complications with the birth and was home 2 days later.

Both of mine were born by elec section at 38 + a couple of days. Both were fine. Try not to worry.

Hi, I was booked for a elective c-section on 38 weeks but went into labour at exactly 37 weeks and doctor had to do a emergency c-section. Everything went fine she was in the incubator for a half and hour and had no problems. I am pregnant again now 23 weeks and will be booking a c-section for 38 weeks again.

I have had 2 electives

DD1 at 39+4 (only discovered she was breech at 38 weeks and this was first available date but given strict instructions to go straight to maternity if I went into labour)

DD2 was at 38+3 and was nearly 37+6 due to complications exactly but that fell on new years day so I had to hand ona bit longer! She did have a little trip to SCBu but mainly because she couldnt keep her temperature up, they monitored her for 6 hours then she was back with me in lots and lots of layers and under a sun lamp! She is currently sitting on my lap aged 3 years and 8 days

Thank you all for your comments. Sorry its taken me so long to reply I have had a horrid dose of proper flu!

I will talk all this through with my new consultant on Wednesday and will go with what they think best in this situation. He is looking to be on the large side already (ds was 10,8, this one already on the 85centile) so at 38+1 we would likely be looking at a 9lb baby anyway which they also need to factor in I believe.

Its nice to hear that there are some positive stories, but its also good to be aware that there are possible risks.
