I keep being told that putting on a bit of weight is normal in pregnancy. I am not huge, but now they want to monitor me/us at every ante natal appt. Unless I am getting as fat as a whale then no chance.

Surely that would be counter-productive as it might make some women miss check ups for fear of being given grief over their weight? Any excessive weight gain would surely be visible and those already overweight at their booking appointment are monitored more closely throughout their pregnancy anyway I thought.

that article makes it sound like they will expect overweight pregnant women to diet - I thought that was a big no-no in pregnancy?! are they saying i should be on slimfast shakes instead of real food??

I think it is talking about extreme cases?
Here in Australia, I have been weighed at every single docs appointment, and although it is a bit of a nightmare - I am 35 weeks and have gained 17 kilos, so am by no means a "model" of what "should" be gained - it does allow me to keep track of things a bit more. My doctor has only once mentioned I might be gaining weight too fast, at the start of the second trimester, and even then all she said was "Less of the cakes, more of the fruit and veg."
I hate that there is pressure on women to not gain too much weight during pregnancy, but I do agree that it should be tracked a bit so as it is known whether or not the mother and baby are at risk. I very much doubt they would put you on a strict diet - more likely to offer some dietary guidelines for people who perhaps do not have a healthy diet when not pregnant so are not getting the best nutrients to their baby.

Used to be standard - my mum said it took 3 pregnancies for her to give up sugar in coffee! I didn't understand why she was giving up anything in pregnancy but she said she couldn't think of any other way to keep her weight gain down. She's proud of the fact that when she got on the scales after having me she was back to her pre-pregnancy weight (which was probably underweight)! I just think that's wrong. Probably just as well she bottle fed though!

Is the weighing in Oz a new thing? I wasn't weighed during my last pregnancy there (in 2004), just at the first OB appointment.

Personally I view pregnancy as a time for me to relax my gym habit and to enjoy eating a bit more and just generally indulge myself.

What has been interesting this time around is how much harder this pregnancy is compared to my last, interesting because the last time I was pregnant I was almost 60kgs heavier.

sallywak · 11/01/2010 13:16

I have eaten like a horse and craved all the "wrong" types of food like biscuits, cakes etc. I am not going to worry about it as all my other pleasures like booze have gone out of the window so hey - why not indulge every now and then.
Maybe this worry about monitoring weight is down to things like them worrying about gestational diabetes etc?? I just hate it when all of my mates keep telling me how big I am - yep it's because I have a BABY in there!!

SofaQueen · 11/01/2010 13:27

I have to say that I agree with the weighing thing - not as an absolute, but as an indicator. Pregnancy is NOT an excuse to eat whatever one wants and in enormous quantities, and only will result in having to try and shift the weight after pregnancy.

fernie3 · 11/01/2010 16:21

I have no idea if I have put on any weight (am 10 weeks) but since the only foods which dont make me sick are porridge or chips (maybe some salmon) I bet i have lol.
