Rachael, they get their knickers twisted the minute you've got a drop of extra sugar in your urine. What they worry about is the risk of you developing 'gestational diabetes' (correct me if I'm wrong someone who knows this better than me!); but please be reassured that I had to have a glucose test last time round and there was NOTHING wrong at all - I was just having a sugary sort of day. They check up the minute they're worried.

The test itself isn't fun because you get very hungry beforehand and then they give you a sugary drink and you have to lie down. But it isn't too awful, honestly.

Rachael, same happened to me and nothing found after the glucose test. In fact was told that a simple finger prick blood test would have saved me the starvation. I was worried like you but had a healthy normal weight baby and urine sugar was fine for rest of pregnancy.

Rachael, I'm awaiting the results of my glucose tolerance test which I had to have on the basis of being 0.1 outside the accepted range for blood sugar levels. It is a bit worrying, I know, and the test is a bore, but they are ultra-cautious about diabetes in pregnancy. If it develops, you just have to take insulin tabs and keep an eye on your diet (they'll give you guidance on this). It DOESN'T affect the baby in any way if it is diagnosed and responds to treatment, but pregnancy diabetes can mean your baby grows bigger faster and then you might have to be induced a bit early.
The diabetes is not transmitted to the baby, and goes away in you after the birth.
Let's hope both our tests are negative, just like everyone else's. Good luck!

Not much to add really, it's just routine, Marina is pretty much spot on. I had to have this test with 1st DS, I was diagnosed as having gestational diabetes & was put on special diet which they explain to you in great detail. Its not too bad, just boring but I did it for the sake of the baby. Then with my 2nd pregnancy the midwife was doing my 'booking in appoint' & the history of gestational diabetes came up so I was sent for a gluclose test at 11 weeks preg. just as well really because again I had got gestational diabetes. (quite early on!) Again I was put on diet but my sugar levels did not respond as well so I then had to be put on insulin. I won't bore you with the details but just want to reassure you it is worth having the test & even if the outcome is gest. diabetes its not all bad...both my boys were fine! the worry is they will grow too quickly so the treatment just keeps everything how it should be at the right pace. both my boys were born within the average weight range. I was not allowed to go past 38 weeks of pregnancy (DS1 seemed to hear this instruction & started his labour the day before I was due to be induced! DS2 however had to come out earlier at 37 weeks due to another complictaion solely to do with me not him!) & yes my gestational diabetes went away both times!! if your results are glucose intolerant I'd be happy to try & assist with any questions...

Rachael17, whatever you do, DO NOT let this worry you! I have had gestational diabetes which , like Dixie, was treated first and foremost with diet. I went onto insulin when it got to the stage where I could eat nothing without my blood sugars going up, and having the insulin injections was a god send. Neither the extra scan nor the glucose test will affect the baby (my babies were fine - towards the end of my last pregnancy I had scans every week!) The only thing that could be harmful to an unborn child would be if diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance went undiagnosed and untreated.
Think of it this way, at least you know that your medical team is on the ball and that you will get an extra chance to see your baby in the womb!!

Bozza · 12/06/2003 15:25

I had to have the test and a growth scan simply because DS was big. In my case it was unrelated and DS arrived as an healthy 9 lb 10 oz baby right on time.

aloha · 12/06/2003 16:06

I had a glucose test because my ds looked chubby in the womb. I was fine and ds is still chubby. The test was nothing for me. Just read a book (there's a longish wait) drink a sugary drink then go home. No lie down for me!! I was cheated.
Even if you have it it can be controlled and all will be fine.

From the day my pregnancy test shows positive until the day I deliver - I have 3+++ sugar every time in my urine. This has been with all 3 pregnancies.

I have had many, many GTTs - all of which show the 3+++ sugar in my urine but my blood sugar is perfect!!

In the end, doctors stopped worrying about it - the consultant has now decided that my kidneys stop filtering properly when I'm pregnant.

My GP jokes and says instead of wasting money on pregnancy tests, I should just pop into the surgery and do a urine test LOL!
