5 weeks pg with pain in lower right hand side of tummy - is this just a cyst?

Hi I am just 5 weeks pregnant, but have a niggling pain in my lower right-hand-side of my tummy. I am assuming this is just a little cyst, and that I can ignore it, but wanted to come to reassure myself with the wider wisdom of the mn crowd!

The pain is no more than an annoying niggle, it is enough to make it difficult to get to sleep, but not enough to wake me or disturb sleep particularly. I am constantly aware of it. I have slight back pain too, and occasional uterus streching discomfort, but this is constant.

So am I right in assuming I have a little cyst that is causing this discomfort? I don't need to do anything about it do I?

Sorry but you can't assume anything in pregnancy. I had unexplained left hand sided pain similar to how you describe both before I got pregnant (investigated by scans no cyst found) and during both pregnancies (first ended in mmc nowt to do with unexplained pain). This pregnancy at 5 weeks (am now 36 weeks) I was being kept awake at night by the pain and due to mc history and a miniscule amount of spotting I ended up at a&e (it was a Sunday) all day on a drip and 15 min obs being nil by mouth in case it was ectopic got a scan later that day that showed it in right place. Pain on one side must must be investigated especially at your stage in pregnancy. The nurse treating me at a&e said she had had same inher pregnancy which also was fine but defo should be checked out bymedical professionals just in case. At you stage in pregnancy a scan would probably only show the sack in right position unlikely to have a heartbeat but theyvwould probably also do hcg blood tests to check is rising okay and give you another scan at 8 weeks to check heartbeat etc. Please get it checked out just to be on safe side. We are not medical professionals on mumsnet!

Just reread post and it sounded scarier than imeant it too. More than likely it is nothing one of those foibles of pregnancy like mine and a&e nurses was, but because of the life threatening risk of ectopic it shouldn't be ignored. Good luck!

I had this at 5/6 weeks when I was pg with dd. I googled it and scared myself so much that I begged my GP for a scan!

Got one at 7 weeks and dd was fine. I had 2 cysts in my left ovary. The pain went at about 9 weeks so I guess they popped or something.

Im now pg with dc2 and didnt have any problems with cysts.

Better to get checked out though just to be on the safe side.

It is probably nothing -- pregnancy brings with it all sorts of aches and pains! However, it is never good to assume and you should definitely mention this to your doctor/midwife in the rare event it is an ectopic pregnancy.

I had aches on one side of my abdomen in last pregnancy and was immediately booked in for a scan the next day (I was six weks).

Thank you for your replies, I will go to EPU tomorrow when they are open, to check it out. The pain is fairly low level and I am guessing that it is just a cyst. I will obviously not hang around if the pain gets worse. But I hope that tomorrow the EPU can put my mind at rest about it and reassure me.

Thandeka - I was wondering how you were, we were on a thread together at the start of your pregnancy, so guess you must be due soon, only a few more weeks left for you, hope it goes smoothly for you.

I'm sure everything is fine but do get checked. I had appendicitis last year and it started off as a dull ache in my lower right tummy. As everyone says tho pregnancy is full of odd twinges/aches so sure you're fine

ectopic pregnancy not that rare, actually, it's one in a hundred. deffo get it checked out, but panic not, there are zillions of completely benign explanations for this sort of pain.
(if they can't rule out ep with a scan, ask for beta hcg blood tests to be taken, every two days for a week).
