Cheap nighties for birth and after?

Hi, has anyone found any decent, cheap nighties for their hospital bag? Don't know if I'll be wearing anything by the end of it but feel I would like to be a bit covered up during the birth.

Also looking for ideas for the birthing pool - maternity bikini/tankini etc?

Primark/Matalan are your best bet. I got some which were £2 each in matalan. TBH I'd just wear one of those in the pool if you want to wear anything but I think naked is probably easiest

shonaspurtle · 10/01/2010 00:02

I got a couple of Primark ones. I'm still using one of them 3 years on...

BertieBotts · 10/01/2010 00:03

If you want to breastfeed don't forget you will need nighties that open at the front - I prefer pyjamas as easier to just pull up (or button ones even better in this cold! And/or get some thin stretchy vest tops to go underneath to keep your tummy warm.)

A tankini top or thin stretchy vest top would be perfect for the birth pool. I am guessing a maternity one would be best, but probably cheaper just to get one about 2 sizes too big - stretchy vest top, would probably not even need to buy too big.

I was offered a hospital gown to wear in the pool but didn't like all the fabric floating around and when it got wet it kept clinging to me and making me cold so I took it off almost straight away, so IME a skintight (or nearly) and quick-drying top is your best bet.

MamaMimi · 10/01/2010 00:10

I just used an old nightie for the birth.

I had to do a bit of a hunt for nighties I could use for breastfeeding afterwards as I didn't want to pay over the odds for them. Ended up finding some perfect ones, with buttons down the front, in Peacocks, about £4 each I think - bargain.

taxiservice · 10/01/2010 00:12

Peacocks definitely. Best range of nightwear and cheap clothes and not as much of a jumble sale as the other cheap clothes shops.

FrameyMcFrame · 10/01/2010 00:24

I just wore one of these in the pool, got a couple as they are dead comfy and usefull.

this

FrameyMcFrame · 10/01/2010 00:25

black ones are good

NonnoMum · 10/01/2010 01:25

I did the old Primark two pound jobbies but the bright pink cheapness did nothing for me in the "goddess" pictures later, holding my bundle of joy.
Have a gawjess one for post-birth...
Good luck with the big push...

Bought 2 very cheap Ethel Austin vest style nighties just 2 sizes bigger - didn't bother with either. Had a pool birth and before hand I was quite uneasy at the prospect of being semi-naked/naked but in reality as soon as they said I could get in the pool I was naked within seconds and didn't care. Found that pj's were most comfortable afterwards and easy for feeding, also felt nicely covered up for wandering around the ward. Good luck!

I got an idea from a friend of mine which worked brilliantly; old, clean shirts of your husbands with the sleeves trimmed and rolled up. Really comfy, flattering, great if you breastfeed and look nicer on photos than saggy old nighties which always tend to look a bit 'illness'.

CMOTdibbler · 10/01/2010 09:46

I bought 4 maternity nightshirts second hand on ebay for less than 2 quid each. Did the job nicely, and then handed on to my friend once I didn't want them anymore

carrielou2007 · 10/01/2010 09:48

I bought a lovely feeding nightie in M and P outlet for a fiver (wish I'd bought two now as would/could wear again). Then bought 2 short sleeved buttons up front knee length nighties in two sizes bigger from Matalan they were 2.50 each in the sale for birth and one for after.

With dd I bought a summer dress (one with little apagetti straps) and sort of ruched stretchy for 2 pounds from Primark that I never wore for the birth but wore a lot the following summer !!

nomorecake · 10/01/2010 09:58

primark, it had a pocket that the tens fit in perfectly

I've got a couple of old shirts to wear from my FiL, I don't have any intention of wearing them, but should I end up in hospital I figured that I should show some degree of decorum. I couldn't find anything in the shops that were front buttoning and didn't look like granny nighties.

nomorebooze · 10/01/2010 15:43

hi!
i just ended up wearing a vest top and bra, and used a hospital towel for modesty, tbh i would jave felt to restricted and hot in anything else. x

MrsBadger · 10/01/2010 15:51

this is tempting me despite the price as it isn't farking pink

like bluefootedpenguin I couldn't wait to strip to get in the pool

ItchyTits · 10/01/2010 18:04

This may be a stoopid question - but is it going to be ruined with blood, new baby poo, etc, as the DP got me a lovely nightshirt for Xmas and I'm wondering whether to leave it for a year or so...

MrsBadger · 10/01/2010 18:06

depends what kind of birth you have

last time I bought an utterly minging one from peacocks and it came home barely worn as I was so hot and got in the pool so fast

they tend to put a nappy on the baby sharpish too

Beanigan · 10/01/2010 21:22

Hi, Primark for me, button down nighties at £3.50 each - bought them yesterday. 2 of them will be enough. I've got a tankini from my pregnancy last time which I'll use for the pool.

One thing I will say, is that I had PJ's last time - BAD idea. I had an epidural and catheter and they fed it through the PJ's but then I had a bled over the PJ bottoms and couldn't get them off! Nighties all the way with me now...... and yes cheap as possible in case you do bleed through the pads (sorry if TMI!).

almondfinger · 10/01/2010 21:41

The thing about Primark is it's almost like a uniform on the mat ward. I had white with blackspots and the woman on the diagonal from me had black with white and I spotted another in the blue version. Still you dont care if you bleed/leak/whatever on them as they can go in the bin when you get home. The Primark slippers didnt even make it out of the hospital, I binned them as I was leaving the ward, they were filthy (doesnt say much about the hosp) and they were crap slippers that did the job when needed. I did have my own lovely night gown with me though.
