'Babymoons' - what do we think?

Euch, maybe I should change that to 'final holidays before dc is born', that babymoon word really is yucky ...

But anyway what I'm after is a bit of advice from those that have had dcs about whether they went on a final fling holiday before the birth and if so, where did they go, and at what stage of the pregnancy? DH has been looking doleful at the thought of curtailed travel after the birth. I ignored it at first but I wonder whether he/we might resent it if we don't go somewhere! Balancing our needs, I'm after something interesting/exciting (for him) yet very very safe (for neurotic old me) ... is this possible? Or should we go on holiday separately?!

Not heard babymoon before.

We went away when I was about 7 months with DD1, and had a lovely time. Where we went would fit your criteria but not your DH's though!

PrettyCandles · 08/01/2010 16:36

"Babymoon" to me is spending time alone with your baby! Preferably skin-to-skin in bed with everything you need at hand's-reach. Blissful!

Please don't go off on separate holidays. That just sets the scene for his need for a break being more important than yours. By all means go on a holiday right now, but not one where you feel restricted, and can't do half of the activities because of being pg. Perhaps a lazy beach holiday, or a city holiday (we went to Boston when I was 19w pg - it was absolutely marvelous).

BTW babies are very portable, especially befroe they start crawling, so you may well be able to do more with one along than you expect. Probably even more thn you can do now while pg.

I've never heard the phrase babymoon.

We went to Ireland when I was 6 months PG, but it was more to celebrate our first wedding anniversary than as a final no DCs trip.

I do miss our lovely long haul holidays though! Planes are just no fun with DTs

DH and I took the eurostar to Paris for a longweekend before DD was born. Lovely and chilled, safe and not too hectic althoug hwe did walk miles. DC2 due in May and we are taking DD to Australia next week for 3 weeks. We figured that we won't be able to afford the BIG trips once DD turns 2 and needs a seat so have taken the plunge and are going now. Our travel plans aven't been curtailed by DD at all.

Thanks all!

ImSoNotTelling - ooh, do tell where you went all suggestions welcome and I might be able to persuade him! At the moment we have no ideas!

Particularly encouraged by your posts PrettyCandles and oopsandbaby - that you can take babies places (well it sounds obvious but I'm just so clueless!) and that you're up for flying long haul when pregnant oopsandbaby - particularly with a DD. I think I'm probably being too cautious aren't I ...

We went away when I was 17 weeks with DS1. We just had a week in Gran Canaria, but it was nice.

oopsandbabycoconut · 08/01/2010 16:57

Georgee - We took DD to New York at 7 months and by 6 weeks she had made 2 trips to Cornwall, by 6 moths she had been oop north, to NI and many other places. She is a well travelled girl!

NewnameSameoldme · 08/01/2010 16:58

'Babymoon' refers to the first, hopefully peaceful, 2 or 3 days, or weeks, you spend with your baby before you let people come and see him/her, not to a final holiday you take while pregnant!

wonderingwondering · 08/01/2010 16:59

I thought a babymoon was just after birth when you sit around cuddling/feeding baby while DH makes tea and cuddles mother & baby!

I found long-haul in pg tiring, and I was wary of travelling too late on as travel insurance usually covers pg-related things until about 24-28 weeks only.

Babies are quite easy to travel with, I'd aim for 4 months - they're usually settled with sleeping and feeding, but don't need solids (all the pureeing and worrying about salt content!), and you can get by with breastfeeding or cold-water sterilising for bottles.

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 17:01

Actually it means both newname.

PrettyCandles · 08/01/2010 17:02

If you fly when pregnant, especially if you fly longhaul, wear flight socks, drink plenty of water, wriggle your toes and rotate your ankles regularly, and get up for a stretch and a walk up and down the plane at least every hour. You are more vulnerable to DVT when pg, and keeping mobile reduces the risk.

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 17:02

Actually it can mean both newname.

shoulditakethisjob · 08/01/2010 17:03

oops, thought it hadnt posted!

I wish my DH would think of something as lovey as whisking me off to a hotel for a couple of nights of genuine relaxation before baby comes. Can someone email him..?
