To combat the nausea in first 14 or so weeks i ate every 2 hours - had to be high carb , so toast, potato, milky porride, pizza chips !

Im now 17 weeks and 9 pounds heavier. I feel uncomfortable and unhealthy . Now im not very nauseous i need to eat healthily but am sooo hungry all the time ..
Whats a typical day for you ?
I work too so haven`t got much time to prepare things .
Cheers x

I recommend porridge for breakfast plus wholemeal toast if you need it - really fills you up for the morning. Aside from that, try to stick with brown bread, wholewheat pasta and brown rice - these are all slow release carbs and will keep you fuller for longer than the white varieties. Oatcakes are good to snack on, as is fruit. You could also make up a batch of veg soup over the weekend and take some to work each day in a flask to have with your lunch or as afternoon snack (you can freeze it if you make a big batch. And do eat some cake now and again - it might be bad for you but if you can't indulge when pg, when can you??

hi fakeblondie, i understand the constant hunger i really do. i am pg with twins (15 weeks) so am always hungry and it is not the normal hunger of non-pg people, i get a horrible gurgly, acidy feeling if i get hungry. i dont mind a bit of weight being put on, but there is a limit i agree.
i have found that my favourite filling foods are also quite healthy though. i am irish so i make wholemeal soda bread and slice it, butter it and put sliced chicken or turkey on it and eat about 6 slices - heaven or put butter and banana on it - some people are horrified by this, but it is my favourite since i was a child and it is healthy, full of fibre and lots of vits and protein in the chicken. if you want bread recipe i will post it (takes less than 10 mins to make two loaves).
i also like to make a recipe i got from a Finnish friend when i was at uni. chop 4 chicken breasts and fry in small amount of olive oil, add finely chopped red onions (2 or 3 small), add chopped pepper, add chopped small mushrooms (whole small punnet).
add quarter cup of boiling water or bit more as you think. break one chicken stock cube into the water in the pan, allow to dissolve and stir in, let it cook until all cooked and soft. Add tub of low fat soft cheese and stir in, dont cook too much, add some spices as you like (no salt, as stock cube has salt). cook wholewheat spaghetti and have together, nice and mixed up - delicious, very nutritious, in a nice big bowl, just what a pregnant woman needs in the evening. takes absolutely no time to make.
hope it was helpful.

I think eating a good breakfast is most important - I always go for a large bowl of muesli + nuts + seeds + dried and fresh fruit + yoghurt. Or porridge (esp. in this weather!)
Toast is not enough and normal cereals like cornflakes don't fill up enough.

For lunch common choices are baked potato + beans or tabouleh and houmous + lebanese pizza from the lebanese cafe.

Dinner can be anything but usually includes a lot of green veg, maybe fish, brown rice, brown pasta etc.

I keep packets of dried apricots at work to snack on. Lots of iron.

I am much less hungry now at 35 weeks than I was in the first 3 months!

I know exactly what you mean fakeblondie.

Im 16 wks and only just getting over the nausea of the last 10 wks where all I wanted to eat was cheese sandwiches and pizza!

I've never been particularly neurotic about my weight/size but pre-pregnancy I have always tried to eat healthily (at least during the week) and exercised fairly regularly (1-2 times per week).

I'm only just starting to get the energy up to exercise again and am determined to get back in the swimming pool next week (on that note, does anyone know of decent maternity swimwear?)

Over the last week or so Ive started to feel a bit hefty, flabby and generally untoned. Obviously I expect to put weight on and cant wait for my bump to develop. But inwardly Im really scared of being overweight and unhappy with my appearance after the baby is born.

I can't really voice these concerns to friends as I am normally a very logical and level-headed person and don't want to appear shallow/vain.

Anyway, apologies for that rant. I know that wasn't the initial topic of the thread but needed to unload!

Ultimately I just really want to get back to some semblance of health soon so that I can feel mentally and physically fit and know that I've done what I can during the pregnancy.

Once again, sorry for the long message!

JBroRo I'm with you there. I rejoined the gym today - my membership expired about a week after I got my BFP and I was too sick and knackered for the first few weeks to rejoin, but I feel so fat and unfit after Christmas I really want to get back into being healthy. I went for a swim and only swam about 2/3 of my usual distance but I felt like I overdid it a bit - I felt like I had a stitch afterwards and was quite tired. I'm going to build up gradually. Do take it easy if you haven't exercised for a while.

Tonight I am having Coke and takeaway pizza... oops!

JBroRo · 08/01/2010 21:15

Thanks Emster - glad to know it's not just me. Was on the verge of driving myself mad!

Ive made a pledge to start being good from Monday - hopefully at least one swim and more fruit/veg.

Have you got a maternity swimsuit?

I've had pasta and a bottle of non-alcoholic becks tonight. Am currently craving a jam doughnut!

Let me know how you get on!

Emster30 · 08/01/2010 23:06

Don't get me wrong, I'm no gym addict, but I really don't want to put on more extra weight than I have to during this pregnancy! Plus it's so depressing that it takes so long to build up reasonable fitness and then it's gone in just a couple of months away from the gym.

I haven't got a maternity swimsuit yet, I'm only 12 weeks so only a little bump so far. I saw they had some in the sale in Mothercare the other day.

Ailz--
What is your soda bread recipe? I would love to know, sounds perfect.

Ailz · 11/01/2010 10:40

Vitapulchra glad to tell you.
I got the measurement in pounds, hope you have them on your scales.
1 and half pounds plain flour
half pound plain wholemeal flour
whole milk - roughly 1 pint.
1 heaped teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
put flour and soda in very large bowl. add milk in large dashes and mix with your hands until mixture forms firm ball, not messy and wet. Roll it out into a ball on floured board (not flat), and cut in two to make 2 cakes. form a flat ball and mark with a cross in middle. bake at 200 degrees celsius until lightly brown. take out place upside down and tap. if hard on back it is done. it tastes best if sliced and buttered cold. good luck! and you can freeze it.
