holiday at 32 weeks

Trying to decide if a holiday abroad (Egypt) will be a good idea or not when 32 weeks preg. Have a 3 year old and am thinking it could be our last chance to fly and go somewhere sunny for a while. What do people think? Will I feel big and fat and hot and bothered or will it be relaxing? Alternative is Centre Parcs.

Honestly? I wouldn't, or certainly not Egypt anyway. It can be REALLY hot some times of year (though not sure what it's like at the moment without looking it up...) and also there are a LOT of unpleasant stomach bugs there which you really don't want at 32 weeks. Have been there twice with DH, we loved it both times but did both get ill both times too...

Also at 32 weeks you might well find the flight uncomfortable, and you would need to check very carefully what the rules are as some airlines might refuse to carry you altogether and others only would with a doctor's note. Travel insurance might also be an issue as lots of them will only cover you during the earlier stages of pregnancy. And if it was me I would worry about what would happen if I went into labour early... So my vote would be for somewhere within UK, or at most the nearer bits of Europe, assuming flights/insurance are not a problem!

Hi, I'm having trouble getting travel insurance after 28 weeks - I would advise you to check airline regulations and find insurance before you book anything..

BabyGiraffes · 06/01/2010 22:56

Just been on holiday between 32 and 34 weeks which was fine, flight included. Mind you, that was Europe; not sure I would have gone to Egypt.
Got a GP letter to say I was fit to fly (they charged me £30 which I thought was shocking for two lines of text!)and checked airline and travel insurance, too.

Mummy369 · 06/01/2010 23:12

Babygiraffes Hi, who did you get insurance with?

Mummy369 · 07/01/2010 00:08

Hi Hellenbach, I've just had a reply to my own post re. insurance and was recommended this insurance firm..

Hope it helps..

I wouldn't touch Egypt with a barge pole at any time. But definitely not whilst pregnant. It's Delhi-belly land.

Monsy · 07/01/2010 06:03

You can get delhi belly anywhere. I have been living in delhi for 2 years (one ds born here, another on the way) and the only times I have been really sick with an upset stomach during that time have been in the UK and France. Maybe I have been lucky though!

BabyGiraffes · 07/01/2010 10:31

Mummy369 sorry laptop crashed last night just as I had finished typing my response. I think I may have been a bit naive but I relied on my bank card travel insurance (Lloyds) for cancellelation cover (up to 32 weeks - I was technically 31 wks 6 days on the day of the flight)

Mummy369 · 07/01/2010 22:33

Hi babygiraffes I think the rest of the policy would be ok, inluding any non-pregnancy related cancellation. My concerns include worst scenario - baby comes early/repatriation/baby coming home etc..

BabyGiraffes · 07/01/2010 22:43

Hi Mummy369 I wasn't too concerned because we were staying with family and this was Germany where the hospitals are very nice! The EU health card thing would have covered the actual delivery and I guess I would just have stayed a few weeks longer and then booked a flight back... So I guess not quite the same as being on holiday in a hotel or holiday let or similar.

Rtuff · 08/01/2010 09:39

I'm off to Mauritius at 32 weeks for a nice relaxing holiday (apart from the 12 hour flight!) We also have a 3 year old, so i'd go for it just be careful of what you eat and don't have ice....

Ooh no - far too vulnerable at 32 weeks or age 3 to tummy bugs. I went there for my honeymoon and was so ill... two weeks 'on the road' staying with locals, camping etc, and was fine, but as soon as I got to the posh resort I was very ill. Pregnant now, with 3 yr old and would not dream of it.

angel1976 · 08/01/2010 13:07

I would go for it. We went to the Maldives when I was 30 weeks pregnant and with a 18-month-old toddler and we all had the best time! The flight was tough but not as difficult as I thought but we went AI at the resort and it was just so nice not to worry about ANYTHING but relaxing. We stayed at the Bandos Resort and they love kids there. No problem with food there and my travel insurance (with AON) covered me up to 32 weeks pregnancy and had letter from midwife but no one asked to see it!

Egypt not a good idea IMO. We did consider it but I did not want to get a dodgy tummy while 30 weeks preggers.

I 'summered' in Asia for 7 weeks and flew back two days before i needed a letter from a GP, but that was with my 3 other dcs(6 an under) and to visit family. As long as your room is air conditioned, you have very good insect repellent and so on I would go for it.
