If one more person tells me to "rest"..

I will murder them. I am on maternity leave, am not a natural sitter-doing-nothing, don't have a TV to watch and am keeping myself busy. People keep telling me to "rest" and it's really annoying me. I feel perfectly fine, am getting 9 hours sleep a night and am not feeling unwell. I am enjoying these last couple of weeks being able to potter around doing bits and bobs that I've been putting off.

Today I was cleaning a mirror when DH told me I should be resting. My mother told me I shouldn't go out of the house "in case I fall over".

I don't want to effing rest, I AM NOT ILL.

I'm with you!

Today is my first day of mat leave and I'm so bored already! Just looked at the clock and can't believe it's only 2.30pm!

I have a list of things I want to get done before baby arrives, but I think suddenly stopping work after being flat-out busy for so long is a shock to my system.

All the way through pregnancy people have been advising me to rest. I'd love to know exactly when I'm meant to have this extra rest during pregnancy as all the way through I was busy and couldn't take time off to myself.

We're not ill, we're 'on the nest'

I am so bored that I am sewing....
How do people be housewives without any children in the house ?

hahahahhahaa resting is not possible in my house dcx4
and with my "Nesting" i cant stop but try and get things in order, but with snow and dcx3 at home i just have to get on with it, i not ill but boy am i in pain feel like baby is goin to drop out when i walk!

You know yourself so do as much or as little as you wanna do! smiling through gritted teeth, while next person tells you to rest!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 06/01/2010 16:51

Tell them keeping active is good for encouraging the baby and having a good labour, that might shut them up! I was the same when pregnant with DS, had too much stuff to do to want to sit around with feet up... this time though I have quite enough to do running after him, so would love a bit more chance either to rest or get prepared for DC2!

And while you're about it, start practising some good comebacks for after the birth too... I can guarantee you all the same people will be nagging you to "sleep when the baby sleeps", which is really annoying if you are not a good daytime napper and would rather be relaxing some other way (or even getting stuff done)!

fernie3 · 06/01/2010 16:53

Im not so far along (only 9 weeks) but I have been quite sick my husband tells me "just lie of the couch and rest for the day we will sort the house when I get home from work" etc. I have three older children (aged 5,3 and 10 months) If I was lying on the couch all hell would break loose not to mention no school or nursery runs!

Poledra · 06/01/2010 16:54

I'd KILL to someone tell me to rest . Mind you, I'm not pg, just have 3 DDs under 6, and a job.

fernie3 · 06/01/2010 16:55

Fibilou my sister is a housewife with no kids, from what I can see she cooks ALOT and lots of home made crafty things etc (mostly for my kids to be fair!) they are beautiful though and her food is amazing sigh

Poledra · 06/01/2010 16:55

I'd KILL to have someone to tell me to rest I mean

Fibilou · 06/01/2010 16:55

I can't believe it has taken me nearly 2 hours to sew on 3 hanging tags onto 2 scarves and a coat.
I really am very poor at sewing ! They do look nice and neat though..

I'm a housewife with no children (though that'll change next month!), and I've no idea what I do. I'm the biggest timewaster in the world. But DH gets a cooked meal from scratch every day, and I made all the curtains, and knit a lot and hope I'm available to drop everything for someone who needs me. But when I had a job my life was WAY more productive...I blame MN and facebook... I need pressure the get stuff done, and without it, i'm rubbish. Also, at the moment finding it hard to get up the energy to put xmas decroations in the loft...

Anyway, your original point, rest. Yep - we don't need it! babies need to get their heads engaged and they won't do that if we sit on our bums all day in comfy chairs. They'll all be breech, and that will hurt more! What do 2/3 of the world do when pregnant? Get on with it!

Oh - just remembered, saw my granny at christmas while staying with my parents, and she asked whether i was staying there til the birth - sounds mad (birth 7 weeks away at the time), but her daughter (my aunt) did exactly that, and I think people often used to. Off to mums, leaving DH behind. What an odd world it used to be. I can't think of anythin worse than leaving DH and staying with mum for 6 weeks!! Don't know how it worked then with being in the right maternity unit either!

BellaBalloon · 06/01/2010 19:05

So jealous. No one has told me to rest - or those that have only gave me more work to do. Haven't started ML yet and the baby is due in 6 days. Will not have got everything done. PLEASE COME LATE BABY SO THAT I CAN sit and watch iplayer all day sort your room out and do all my chores ...just for a few days... pretty please??!!

wasabipeanut · 06/01/2010 19:51

Whilst I can appreciate the irritation of being told to rest when you feel fine, I would like to add a note of caution for the first timers here. You won't get another chance for quite a long time.

And if you have any more babies you will crave a few minutes of rest when trying to stop a toddler from destroying themselves/your house.

Just a thought

Jayfer · 06/01/2010 20:21

I'm 24wks tomorrow and have been told by the hospital to rest. I've got arthritis which is playing up so if I do anything (and I mean anything - even washing my hair!!) I pay for it with large dollops of pain.
My consultants told me to grin and bear it but I can't lie on the sofa for the next 4months I'll go completely barmy! I've done it for a week and a half now and have officially reached my limit. Climbing the walls now!!

Anyone else 'resting' want to play eye spy?!

Fibilou · 06/01/2010 20:29

Wasabi, sitting on my bum doing nothing for the next 2 weeks won't be much help in preparing for the Armageddon that is about to envelope the house then, will it !

wasabipeanut · 06/01/2010 20:46

Probably not Fibilou. Just don't say you weren't warned.

BellaBalloon · 06/01/2010 20:47

But Fibs haven't you got friends to go to cafes with? Box sets to watch? cupboards to sort? baking to do? I could easily fill 2 weeks.

not long for us!

wasabipeanut · 06/01/2010 21:08

Fingers crossed! Although not in the next few snowy days would be good.

hophophippidtyhop · 06/01/2010 22:34

I was off for 3 weeks before official due date, spent the first week getting stuff washed and ready, and putting meals in the freezer. Sat down to work my way through 3 seasons of medium, 3 episodes in and my waters broke! This time around,(only 9 weeks at the moment) and my mum has already given me that 3 legged puppy look for carrying 2 bags at once, and of course if I get all grr about it, it's my hormones!

Fibilou · 07/01/2010 17:04

Bella, that's the sort of thing I've been doing (sorting cupboards, catching up with paperwork, cooking, freezer filling) - DH still thinks I am doing too much

OP posts:
displayuntilbestbefore · 07/01/2010 17:08

wasabipeanut - good advice there, I didn't relax and take it easy as much as I should have done first time around and 2nd and 3rd times were SO much harder having children already there to run around after.
Agree with Filibou that it's annoying as you're not ill just pregnant BUT do also think being warned about slipping over in ice a fair point as you really don't want to break a limb or do any damage to you or the baby...
get a happy medium - keep on top of things so you're not playing catch up or tempted to do loads round the house when the baby arrives but also makes sure you have loads of time to just relax and enjoy not having anything to do - can't stress enough how much you will hanker after it if you ever have any further pregnancies when you're already a mum!

BellaBalloon · 07/01/2010 18:21

Well Fib then he's just being silly and I would be annoyed too. Sitting doing absolutely nothing is actually counter productive. Your muscles will all seize up tell him and then you'll be no good in labour! You have to keep moving about. Quite sweet though. My DP is a bit too much the opposite really...You can't win can you!

I want to be doing those things myself- just not working, but because i only have half a brain left the work is taking soooooooooooo long.

Still midwife came round today and I'm all set for a homebirth, Was quite weird when she said see you next Thursday, if not before.
Can't believe that the time is upon me.
So why am I typing nonsense on here instead of working?[hmmm]

back to it zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
