27 weeks and small bleed - reassurance needed

I am 27 weeks gone and this experienced my first proper scare of the pregnancy earlier this evening.

I went to the loo and noticed some pink discharge on the tissue. After a couple of panicked phone calls to the Maternity Department and having to drink cold water etc., I was advised that everything seemed fine.

However, being the worrier that I am, I went down to my local Maternity Centre to listen to the heartbeat which also sounded normal and healthy.

However, despite all these reassurances, I am still feeling really unsettled. Please can someone tell me if this kind of thing is normal? I haven't experienced any bleeds up until now and my husband and I did not get 'intimate' beforehand. The midwife suggested that it could be a cervical bleed due to my uterus stretching but I am still worried.

Please help!

Please help - my mother lost a baby during late pregnancy and I'm petrified that's happening to me and I'm just ignoring the warning signs...

I am really freaking out.

Hi Hoopermummy this happened to me when I was 21 weeks. It was only a very small amount of bloody discharge on wiping but I stayed in hospital overnight so they could monitor me and everything was fine. I am now nearly 30 weeks. They couldn't really find a reason for it and like you my DH and I hadn't been 'intimate' either. They just said it was one of those things. Did they do an internal examination on you to check that everything is still closed up? I was worried that it was a 'show' but it wasn't.

I thought maybe it was because I might have overdone it a bit the day before as we had just had a new bathroom put in and I was very stressed because my house was a tip and I was cleaning non stop all day!!

I had exactly the same thing with my son at around that time. I live in India and had just been to Goa on holiday where the roads are a little bumpy to say the least! When I returned, i got some pink blood for a day or two. I was petrified too, and immediately went for a scan and was told everything was fine, but that maybe my cervix had just got torn or scratched a little - or something like that i can't really remember and just to take it easy. It never came back and my son was born very healthily at 42 weeks. If you've been told not to worry, then please don't worry, just get some rest and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

lots of women do have spotting and lose pink discharge in pregnancy. there is a difference between blood tinged discharge and proper frank bleeding

if you have been checked and there has been no more discharge, then odds are, everything is ok, altough i can understand your worry.

more significant warning signs are lack of normal movement, proper red bleeding, waters breaking early etc...

a bit of pink discharge is probably nothing

Thanks everyone.

The hospital told me not to come in but I insisted on going to my local maternity centre to get the heartbeat checked at least.

The midwife at the maternity centre was really surprised that the hospital didn't ask me to come in but she was unable to do an internal or give me a scan because they're just not equipped for it.

I think that's probably why I'm still worried - because it hasn't been properly checked out - but baby is moving around normally and I haven't had any more bleeding...

I'm just really relieved to hear that this kind of thing has happened to other people and that it's probably nothing to worry about.

I had this at 27 weeks. I can tell you what happened to me if you like....

I had a TINY amount of pink spotting. I was admitted for a night. They did a CTG to check if I was contracting. They also did a speculum examination to see if they could see if my cervix was closed or not. They kept me in overnight for observation and I was given steroids for baby's lungs the next morning. Everything appeared normal so the steroids were just a precaution. Went home the next day and had an uneventful pregnancy until 39 wks when I had a spontaneous vaginal delivery (VBAC) and a very healthy baby girl

I'm suprised they didn't ask you to come in too. I don't know what the starndard policy is for most units but any bleeding at 27 weeks is surely worthy of investigation. Is it worth calling again and hoping you get to speak to someone else? Probably not the done thing but if you're still worried and need your mind put at rest.....

SplitPea - we don't have a car and our hospital is far enough away to make it prohibitive. Obviously, we would be down there in a heartbeat if I continued to bleed but, due to really strained finances, I think I'm going to just take it easy and keep an eye on things for now.

I've had a very uneventful day so far so I am hoping that it was just one of those weird little things that doesn't mean anything...

The worst thing about all this is that I went to see my GP yesterday morning regarding antenatal depression and spent much of the day sobbing my heart out. When all this happened in the evening, I assumed it was because of me (stress harming the baby etc.) or that I'd jinxed the pregnancy in some way. The midwife was lovely and tried reassuring me but I can't help thinking that this is all my fault.

I just hope that this turns out to be a silly pregnancy story that I tell me friends with a wry smile on my face...

(((((((((HooperMummy))))))))

I think you're doing the right thing TBH.

Try and relax and enjoy the nest few weeks - your baby will be here before you know it!

SplitPea · 05/01/2010 16:26

Next - not nest

Although Nest could be quite appropriate actually!

everylittlebeat · 05/01/2010 16:29

I had 2 quite large bleeds and a large blood clot at 19 & 20 weeks - very scary. Went on to have a perfectly healthy baby girl at 40 weeks

Good luck

Phew! It does make me feel better to know that others have gone through this and it turned out to be nothing to worry about.

Thank you everyone for putting my mind at ease - hopefully I will actually get some sleep tonight (although I imagine I'm going to be a bit of a knicker-checker for the rest of my pregnancy)!

I'm seeing my midwife on Thursday so may ask her to refer me for a scan, just to be on the safe side. It can't hurt, right?

Had similar during both pregnancies. Turned out to be nothing. Everything was fine, went to term and didn't happen again.

First time at 19 weeks so they did a scan to check position of placenta. Second time at 28 weeks and as I already had a scan and knew the placenta position was ok they didn't do one.

As well as sex being a possible cause they said that having a big poo could be another cause!! As the cervix is very vascular during pregnancy.

Unless you have any pain or it increases I wouldn't worry (although I know its hard not to).

Good Luck.

HooperMummy · 06/01/2010 22:26

Thank you all so much for the reassurances - I do feel much calmer now so it is much appreciated!
