Hi

This week my DH was sick with a temp so I was making him take his temp. Out of interest I took my temp and discovered that it was 35.1C, after doing a search on the internet I found that the 'normal' range is 37C. I have taken it a couple more times (at the end of day when suppossed to be warmest). Everything I have read about pregnancy is that it is more usual for your body temp to rise, though I have no idea what my temp was before I was preg.

Oh and I am 16 weeks.

I am seeing my MW this week anyway but thought I would see if any one on MN knows anything about body temp, should I be worried about it being low or am just being paranoid?

Thanks

Temps are usually high in pregnancy.

Its probably fine and try taking temp first thing in morning before you have got out of bed... but if you are worried maybe ask midwife for thyroid function test as this can cause low temps (see thread on this from a couple of days ago)

When I was just pregnant and up until around 18 weeks I had the shivers all the time, then hot flushes. I felt miserable as had all the nausea etc at this time too.
At one point my temp was 38ish, then the next day I would be 35ish - I felt like I was so run down all the time, then one day I just felt better. My Dr advised me to take paracetomol on the days that my temp was high and to not wrap up, to keep cool (hard when you are shivering!).
I would get checked out just to make sure everything is OK though.

I did temping when ttc. My temperature was usually below the graph.

I guess some of us have a lower body temperature. I'll go and find a thermometer and find out what I am right now (6 weeks).

yama · 04/01/2010 22:05

I'm 36.8. I am wrapped up though. Sorry, I'm no use am I?

How are you taking your temperature? It should be 37 if taking in your mouth but lower if you're doing it from your forehead or underarm etc.....think underarm should be 36ish from what I remember. Wouldn't worry about it though!

My normal ear temp is around 35.1. So is DS's. Its not just my thermometer. I think it helps to know what your normal temp is then you can see a difference.

All the details regarding temp rising in pregnancy are likely to be from fertility charting information.

When you ovulate your temparature rises and stays high if you are pregnant. This is based on your basal body temperature, which is your core body temperature. You can only get an accurate reading of your bbt if you do it first thing in the morning as soon as you wake up (before you move or talk etc...) most other times of the day it will be different and quite possibly lower.

I wouldn't worry too much as it will fluctuate, but probably mention it to your midwife for peace of mind

Thanks all.

I am taking it with a mouth thermomitor. I don't know what my temp before pregnancy was (as I got preg 2nd month of trying so never had to do temping).

Yama - Yes you are useful, you made me lauggh at your dedication to answering my thread by checking your temp!

My DH is finding it ammusing that when everyone else we know are checking their temp because they have the flu and it is high I am obsessively checking it because I think it is low.

Of course it could just be a reflection of the artic temperatures we have at the moment.

Will speak to my MW to see what she thinks, no doubt will tell me to stop bothering her with such little things!

I took temp alot when TTC and was always on the low side. Am now 17 weeks pregnant and mw was surprised at how low temp is (usually around 35-36). I think mine is down to my underactive thyroid, as one of the symptoms is a low body temp.
Don;t think it's a problem other than I often crank up the heating to keep me warm and everyone else roasts!!

MumNWLondon · 06/01/2010 11:29

Shauri - if your underactive thyroid is under control your temp should not be low. Low temps can be a sympton of an un or under treated underactive thyroid. If its not under control you need to discuss with GP - there was a thread on this.... as rule of thumb TSH should be below 2 and T4 above 16, and best to get it checked in the morning.
