Stupid uncomfortable Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder Maternity Bra Rant!!!

Right ladies, I need some recommendations for comfortable, and dare I say non matron like maternity Bra's! After reaching 21 weeks stubbornly clinging onto my favourite wired bra's I had reached popping out proportions and finally threw myself into Mothercare to be measured. I normally wear a 34 d, so given the now gargantuous proportions of my boobs was surprised when she declared I was a 36 d? Surely not I thought, but she is the expert right? We then went to browse the 'selection' of maternity bra's which turned out to be a choice of ONE! I spotted a t-shirt moulded type affair only to be told that they did not have my size (still in doubt),so off I went with my FIRM SUPPORT in 36 d, which not only flattened my boobs in an old lady cleavedge way, but sent them in the opposite direction to each other?!? I took it off and when the breezy (perky 32b) asssistant asked me how it was she was clearly getting bored when I tried to explain that it was not the look I was hoping to achieve! She then upgraded me to a 36dd, which I hoped would inturn increase my selection, nope! She came back with the next size with a look that told me she was due to finish soon, had a mountain of ironing, had to get the tea ready and had very little interest in my quest for the perfect bra! Needless to say I spent £20 on her recommendation, which having worn it today is riding up my back and drooping at the front! I feel like a granny! HELP! Whats the point of being measured if they cant even get it right!

i would get measured properly in rigby and pellor!!! or la sensa or local dept store. then have at least 2 hours spare to try on every bra in the shop till you find a comfy fit.

Since i am on baby number 3 i have given up and invested in 3 bravado bras super ugly but comfy and supportive and will be useful feeding bras.

Go to Bravissimo if you have one in range. I've been fitted there several times and they are brilliant - they don't bother with measuring, they do it all by eye and trying things on you, and they have nice bras in bigger cup sizes. If you get a bra that fits properly you can still wear underwiring.

MrsBadger · 03/01/2010 19:09

take everythign back to mothercare (and never go there again for anythign at all if you can help it, they are shite on every level)

go to bravissimo even if it is an hour each way

there is nothign to stop you wearing wired bras in pg so long as they fit properly

morethemerrier · 03/01/2010 19:32

ooohhh there is hope after all! Just checked an we have a Bravissimo in Manchester, so will take back horrid uncomfortable bra and head over there, I wondered if I could still wear underwired but the Mothercare lady tut tutted when I said I had been wearing one at this stage? Just goes to show its worth going to a specialist fitters, funny really as its something so necessary but we dont tend to get fitted correctly and end up uncomfortable not just in pregnancy, I know loads of women who have just one favourite bra! And yet we wouldn't wear the wrong size shoes?!? Thanks for your recommendations, I will let you know how I get on!

Hot milk, hot milk, hot milk! I have one from here and it is amazingly comfortable and keeps you in a good shape, plus it is for nursing too. Definitely don't use ones from mothercare, look awful and aren't comfortable.

jojochanel · 03/01/2010 20:01

I'm huge in the boob department - 30G when not pregs reaching 34G when pregs and 32J when feeding. Would second all the comments about bravissimo. I'm on baby number 3 and in underwired again and plan on being so until about 38 weeks. Never had any probs with wires for baby no. 1 and 2 despite the official line that you shouldn't. The bravissimo ladies told me that as long as the bra fits then it's not an issue - just a problem if too tight.

jaype · 03/01/2010 20:12

Ugh - mothercare bras give no support whatsoever. Twas the only place open when my milk came in last time so dp was sent to get one that I then only ever used for sleeping in (I leak like a fountain 24/7 for the first 6 months) as it was so crap. I recommend Emma Jane or HotMilk - EmmaJane are very supporting. This time I just got some bra extenders in pg as my ribs expanded. And I wore underwired to 35 weeks... can't get comfy at all now so have switched to my prospective HotMilk feeding bras for the last few days.

chegirlwithbellson · 03/01/2010 20:37

I have pretty much given up on maternity bras. I buy sports bras now. They are cheaper and usually plain cotton v the nylon and scratchy lace available to pg women.

I thought MC was rubbish too. I went when i was fairly early in pregnancy with DC4. I am quite small busted when not pg (about 32b) but as soon as I get pg I explode boob wise. I went to get measured. The woman looked my up and down (she actually did look me up and down!) and said 'are you pregnant?'
. Then she said 'well I can see you are not going to be more than 32b for a start' Without even getting her tape measure out!

As it was my 4th pg and I was 40 I had a pretty good idea of how much my body had changed etc so didnt feel that it was worth sticking around for that old bag to measure me up. Went to John Lewis and I was a 36DD.

I love the Hotmilk bras but really cant be arsed to spend anymore money on maternity bras now I am on DC5 .

mad4mainecoons · 03/01/2010 21:47

im with the other ladies on the hot milk!!! i have two and they are supremely comfortable and also double up as nursing bra's. and they are beautiful - so you feel a little less like a whale!

i have seen some on ebay much cheaper then in store but they may well be unusual sizes?

heather1980 · 03/01/2010 22:28

i have 2 freya bras that are v pretty.

when i was preg with ds i went to m&s and they measured me as a 34d but the bras they sold me were really uncomfy so i went into a local bra shop that doesn't use tape measures and she measured me as a 32g!
she told me that a bra should be close fitting, and that when you go down a back size go up a cup size

i would only ever go to a specialist bra shop, and one that doesn't use tape measures. never ever go to MC or m&s.

rumpleteaser · 04/01/2010 10:11

Oooh Bravissimo definitely!
I now live in Bulgaria though and they don't have Bravissimo but I found a website curvylicious.co.uk and I order a few bras and then send back or change the ones that don't fit. They have a gorgeous range of giant bras, I'm currently 25 weeks and a 34J. I am wearing sexy, reasonably priced, comfortable, underwired bras!!
If they get too much bigger though I might have to get DP to rig up some kind of scaffolding for me

KarinG · 05/01/2010 15:20

I second the hot milk recommendation. They are quite pricey, but worth the money as not only do they fit well but look nice too.

I gave up on so called maternity bras during my last pregnancy - they were on the whole utter rubbish. I ended up going to M&S and getting some super supportive granny bra. It wasnt in the slightest bit sexy, but it was incredibally comfortable. I also wore sports bras which did the trick too.

I found the maternity bras in M&S (and mothercare) unsupportive, uncomfortable and reminiscent of the first bras i had when i was 12.

Ronaldinhio · 05/01/2010 15:27
