any one else in this situation? told GP at around 4.5 weeks pg, and have received exemption certificate through the post when I was 7 weeks pg, but have had no correspondence at all with a MW. Is this normal with the 2nd pg?

I don't want to phone the hospital because they'll think I'm neurotic probably, afterall it's still the festive season until Tuesday next week...

Not sure whether to give them the benefit of the doubt. Bit disappointed that I've not been invited for a dating scan yet.

At my surgery you had to ring and book in yourself with the midwife. I saw a GP at 5 weeks and told him but was still told to make my own arrangements for the midwife around 8/9 weeks and the scans were booked through her too. Can you ring and check with your surgery?

lovechoc · 02/01/2010 19:18

I was told by the GP that a MW would be in touch at around 10 weeks, so ofcourse I've been waiting and waiting and just assumed because of the holidays that explains why I've had nothing from MW. Phoned surgery last week and they didn't seem to have a clue, so now I'm thinking of just phoning the hospital and arranging the scan myself. Just want to make sure there's a baby there!

yes you should have heard from them - do contact them because you also need to get your screening tests done if you want them and they have to be done before 14 weeks I think.

RorysRacingReindeer · 02/01/2010 19:28

go back to the dr and get them to chase it up - i don't think sonographers will let you just book yourself in.

newpup · 02/01/2010 19:31

The midwives here will not see you until you are 12 weeks and you only get a 20 week scan unless you are unsure of the dates. Needless to say every pregnant woman who sees the midwife is 'unsure' of her dates!

lovechoc · 02/01/2010 19:33

in the area I'm from usually they do a 'booking in' appointment at home which lasts about 45 mins to 1hr. the receptionist on the phone said she has never heard of this before - was she being deliberately thick? I don't know...

So yes, I'll take your advice and I'll get an appointment with the GP next week ASAP. I don't want to miss out on a scan.

thanks

newpup that did cross my mind that perhaps there's a reason why they aren't coming out to see me, to do with the fact it's the second pregnancy and I've been there and done it before etc. But surely they need to get all the admin done and get a scan booked, unless my area is doing what your area is currently doing and I wasn't told about it all by GP on my last visit. I suppose they could be short staffed at the moment.

Has anyone been informed about the swine flu vaccine yet? I haven't heard anything about it, surely they should be encouraging pg women to get the vaccine??

Better follow it up - with my DS I told GP at 6 weeks and then heard nothing, chased at 10 weeks to find out my referal letter had got lost, couldn't get a scan on NHS because it was all booked up at the hospital for the 3 week nuchal scan window (11-14 weeks).

lovechoc · 02/01/2010 19:39

thanks mumNWlondon I will chase it up. Funny how I just assumed everything would go smoothly this time round. last time the MW couldn't get hold off me because I was in Blackpool! she had left loads of messages on answer machine. Now this time I've got the opposite problem!lol

I had similar to MumNWLondon last time - doc letter of referral got lost, so when I eventually contacted the hospital they had no record of me. Better to chase it up and make sure... once you've got your booking appointment (similar/same time as 12wk scan) hopefully things will go smoothly.

Scruffers · 02/01/2010 19:59

On the swine flu jab, I had mine in mid-November so if you want it I would recommend calling your doctors as they should have it by now. If you feel you have been forgotten then start chasing people up. You can't always rely on others to remember you. I called the midwife myself and got a booking appointment at 8 weeks and whlst I was there I booked in my bloods and first scan. That way I could choose the times and dates I wanted. Reading these postings makes me realise how good my care has been, we have an early pregnancy unit so when I was worried about things I had an early scan at 8 weeks. My 20 week scan was offered as standard and booked when my first scan was completed.

EdgarAleNPie · 02/01/2010 20:02

call the local hospitals maternity department. this happened to me twice - the referral form was just sat there in a pile waiting to be worked.

lovechoc · 02/01/2010 20:09

the thing is everything went smoothly the first time, I got all the tests and scan bang on time when they are supposed to be done without any chasing up. I'm actually disappointed at how things have went this time round and I think I will phone the maternity hospital direct and speak to a MW because at least I'll know they have spoken to me and can get the ball rolling.

I'm now 20 weeks pg and have seen a midwife once at my booking in appt at 5 weeks . I am not due to see anyone until Feb when I have an appointment with the consultant, so have taken matters into my own hands and booked an AN appt with my GP for this week.

I'd be seriously worried if this were my first pg, but it is my 3rd and I'm a bit more relaxed about it all. In my area, everything is done via referral from the GP, you can't book yourself in for appts which is why it has taken so long. I am due to have my 20 week scan on Wednesday but that is only a scan, with no opportunity to speak to a MW or even to hear the heart beat or check everything is going ok.

Actually, when I went for my booking in appt at 15 weeks I was questioned about why I was so late going to the GP. I told them I had seen the GP at 6 weeks and watched him fill the referral form out in front of me

SecretSlattern · 02/01/2010 20:13

My booking in appt was at 15 weeks, not 5

lovechoc · 02/01/2010 20:17

SecretSlattern that's terrible that you've had to wait all that time for booking-in appointment, regardless of whether it's your first or fifth baby. It's still a worrying time, do GPs not realise this??? Can't believe you've hardly seen your MW though. Seems the care differs depending on where in the UK you live.

I can't remember if GP filled form out in front of me now, it seems such a long time ago now!

This makes me feel better, I will be 15 wks, by the time I get my 12 wk scan So it will be a big rush to try and fit me in for the 16 wk blood tests.Think everywhere seems to be really busy at the moment! annoying, as I really want tosee what is going on inside, and to reasure me there is actually a baby in there ! lol

lovechoc · 03/01/2010 18:27

del1 that's really bad that you've had to wait all that time, but at least you've been told what's happening and when. I haven't a clue what's going on So I've decided to phone the hospital tomorrow - there's bound to be a MW working even if it's a PH tomorrow. I just want a scan date sorted!

lovechoc · 05/01/2010 13:40

Progress made! I contacted the MW today and it turns out that the GP had done the referral but that over an 8 week period it hadn't reached the antenatal clinic - very odd. Anyway, the MW who I spoke to said that she is having the referral faxed from surgery to clinic and I get a scan next week, usual checks etc.

If I hadn't phoned, I'd probably miss all the blood tests and checks and end up rolling into the labour ward in 27 weeks time!
