Pain under ribs

I have pain on and under my lower ribs on the front right side. It doesnt hurt when I am upright but if I lie down and try to move I have a sharp pain and I can't lie on the affected side as it feels so bruised. The area is painful to the touch

I'm 32weeks pregnant-anyone have any idea what this could be?

You should phone your midwife, although its probably just a baby's foot stuck or something, pain under the ribs is a sign of a life threatening complication of pre-eclampsia called HELLP syndrome. Other signs are:

The following are the most common symptoms of HELLP syndrome. However, each woman may exhibit experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • right-sided upper abdominal pain or pain around the stomach
  • nausea, vomiting
  • headache
  • increased blood pressure
  • protein in the urine
  • edema (swelling)

You may not have any other signs though, I didn't even get high BP until very late on. You need to call your midwife asap.

No idea but I have it, or have had it. For me, it only happens when I lie on my left and I think it is because the top baby (I have twins) is breech and the head of that one then kind of tips over to the left and it is pulling on something or pressing on a nerve or something.
To ease it, I may just turn to the other side or I have to sit up to try and let things drop down before turning to lie on the other side.
Is your pain to the touch quite sharp?

I now also have it during the day at one particular precise point on my lower right hand side - maybe where twin 2's bottoms is - and I asked the midwife and she said she didn't really know but was probably stretching the muscles, pressing on a nerve or something like that.

In your case, do you know what position your baby is currently in? It could be that if it is head down you have a foot digging into a rib maybe? Can you push it out of the way or is it too sensitive for that?

Sorry not to be of more help.

I don't have pain constantly-only when I move in certain ways and it's really sore when I touch the affected area
No nausea or vomiting
No headache
No swelling

?

do u know wot way ur baby is lying ?? I was told @ 28 appointment my baby was transverse and dnt think it has moved since then!!

i totally feel for you! its happning every nite for me now and the only way i can get rid of it is if i turn over on the other side or stand up for a few minutes!

sleeping is getting really uncomfortbale now- feel like im waking up every 2mins!!

im due for another appointment with M/F soon so will mention it 2 her then x.x

I had this from about 30 weeks - doctor said it was a trapped nerve. Kind of felt like a stitch but was a really sharp pain.

Def get checked out by the MW though and get her to test your urine, just in case.

I got this right through the last half of my first pregnancy and it's recently kicked in on this one (I'm about 25wks now).

Last time an osteo told me that it was something to do with muscles pulling because of some problem in the back that is made worse by pregnancy, and osteo treatment did seem to help a little, I also find that a nice hot bath relieves the pain a little (I tend to feel it a lot, especially when sitting, which makes work tricky!)

I had this with dd, she was breech until about 34-35 weeks and it was her head pushing into my ribs. Only felt it in certain positions.

BTW I had pre-eclampsia in my other pregnancy, you would defo have swelling and/or high protein in your urine if it was pre-eclampsia.

hth

With HeLLP you wouldn't necessarily have swelling or protein until it goes critical - I didn't. HELLP is different to straight PE.

Update:-I woke up the ysterday morning and vomitted also had wind-like pains all over my stomach- had a routine checkup with the consultant booked yesterday anyway-explained my symptoms and he booked me straight onto the ward. Suspected to be liver problems/gallbladder problems or chollawatsit (the one that makes you itch). Anyway all the bloods came back negative so they have no clue what is wrong with me. I stated overnight for monitoring anyway. I don't feel sick today but the pain under my ribs remains. Am awaiting an outpatients appointment for an abdominal scan.

Definately not HELLP. BP and bloods all fine

should read 'stayed overnight' not 'stated'
