Hi all,

I am after a little bit of reassurance and some positive good stories please...

I am 10wks pregnant with baby no 2 and my little girl has come down with chickenpox. I've never had chickenpox so I don't know if I have any immunity to it. I have had my bloods tested today for varicella-zoster immunity and will get the results on Thursday. I am truly hoping I do have immunity, but if not, I'll begin immunoglobulin treatment.

Basically, I was wanting to know if any of you ladies had gone through anything similar, or know of anyone who has. Anything I look at on the internet is filling me with dread and I have scared myself silly.

Thank you

Hi there
sorry to hear about this - what a horrible time of year for your little girl to be unwell!
I have no experience myself, but I know that when my mum was pregnant with me - 26 years ago - all four of my older brothers and sisters came down with chicken pox, and I was fine. She was seven months pregnant though, but I have spoken to her about it since, and she said she was told there was little risk of anything happening to the baby even if she had caught it, because the baby is protected before the mother.
They also all had German measles when she was preg with me (was a tough year!), this was early in the preg, around 12 weeks, and she had not had that before, but, again, she was fine. And I have turned out ok!
Hope this gives you a bit of peace of mind

Are you absolutely sure that you have not had it before? My mum couldnt seem to remember but thought I had literally one spot when my class had it at school. When DS got it I was absolutely fine

Thanks both. Thankfully my little girl was well for Xmas, she came down with it on Boxing day and is already feeling better

My mum is absolutely certain I have never had it, though she thinks I may have come into contact with it when other kids had it. I have to phone for my results tomorrow and I am just praying I do have immunity. I am absolutely certain I will have contracted chickenpox if not, my poor little girl has wanted lots of mummy cuddles and has slept in our bed the last few days too!

Thanks for the positive stories though, it really does make me feel more hopeful.

I have never had chicken pox and when I was pg with DD one of the children I looked after got chicken pox. I was 9 weeks and terrified, the MW did a blood test which showed immunity so I must have had it at some point or the constant contact with sickly pox-y kiddies gave me immunity. All my brothers and sisters had it but mum says I just never got any spots.

Fingers crossed you have immunity

ds caught chickenpox when i was 8wks....i had not had it, contracted dr who made me get the immunity test, which showed i didn't have immunity...i then had to have an immunoglobulin reaction to try to stave off the pox (you need to get this within 10days of exposure).....however the pox developed 4 days after the injection.... I felt completely dreadful and was ill for approx 2wks, spots/itching etc....though believe i had the pox more mildly than if i had not had the immunoglobulin reaction, so strongly advise you get this if you have no immunity.
Like you, i trawled through the internet and was scared silly with the risks of chicken pox to the foetus, however the risk is 'low' however if you are unlucky, effects can be devastating. I was offered an early anomalie scan at 18wks and all looked normal....they were looking at limb length etc. Am now 31wks and all has been normal in the pregnancy. I have scans every 6-8 weeks to check on growth, but all seems to be normal so far. Won't know until birth if all really is completely normal, though i suspect it will. Ironically my grandma had chicken pox when pregnant with my mum though was in the 2nd trimester. My mum turned out normal!

Thanks all for your lovely comments. My doctor called me this evening and thankfully it was good news, she said I had 'an immunoglobulin reaction to varicella so am therefore immune' I swear I kissed the phone when she said that.

I hope everything is OK sonsmum I know how scary it is and I only went through the first stage. The internet is a wonderful tool, but it can scare us silly. I swear I will never google another pregnancy risk again!

Thanks again x
