M&S or John Lewis, who do you think makes the best plain white sleepsuits?

Or any other newborn essentials for that mater. Any advice gratefully received

IME it depends on the shape of the baby and its a case of trial and error. M&S ones aren't as good quality as 7 years ago....not sure about JL but Mamas & Papas do good quality ones at this moment and in plain white too.

onadietcokebreak · 29/12/2009 00:27

To be honest I just got the cheapest ones from Asda/ Tescos......you will get inundated with lovely gifts so not worth spending much.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 29/12/2009 00:28

Not had a John Lewis babygor before but have had clothing for dcs when they were toddlers from there and they always washed and dried well. Marks' are also good but I found some of their things would shrink after a few rounds in the tumble dryer!
I actually found Tesco ones or Bruin (from ToysRUs) brilliant! Also Sainsburys did lovely towelling ones that were really cosy for when it was very cold. They get washed and worn so frequently that I gave up on spending too much on them and those brands worked best for my 3!

electra · 29/12/2009 00:28

Oh and I do like Petit Bateau ones but they are expensive!

peppapighastakenovermylife · 29/12/2009 09:31

I would just get the cheap ones from tesco / asda as firstly they grow so quickly (mine was in newborn size for 3 days and then 0 - 3 for two weeks!), secondly they will probably get covered in sick / poo explosions and thirdly people will probably buy you lovely things.

seeker · 29/12/2009 09:35

With newborn babygros it's quantity rather than quality. You need lots - so Asda or Tesco are your best bet.

Save your shopping time and money for some gorgeous outfits to show the baby off in, and to dress it in to cheer yourself up on the difficult days. For every day go cheap and cheerful.

5ringinginthenewyear · 29/12/2009 09:37

Mothercare do some lovely ones with built in babymitts, you just fold the cuff over. An absolute godsend if youhave a scrather.

ihatetinselbob · 29/12/2009 09:39

matalan also do lovely ones with built in mitts, otherwise tesco, asda or sainsburys.
They spend more time in the washer than on the baby anyway!!

ImSoNotTelling · 29/12/2009 09:40

Lots of babies are only in newborn size for about 2 mins, so don't go mad. You can send people out for stuff once you know what size baby you've got on your hands!

I would get a 5 or 7 pack of vests and same of babygros. Mothercare do mid price packs as well.

Plain white is good for a baby so you can bleach them...

ImSoNotTelling · 29/12/2009 09:40

Oh yes scratch mits forgot about those!

humptynumpty · 29/12/2009 09:48

TBH never had anything from John Lewis. Had m&s.
My main priority was washing. IMO everything for baby needs to be washable at a normal setting and able to go in the tumble drier. Also the design. Some sleepsuits only had poppers round the crotch iyswim so you had to put over baby's head like a t shirt then pull down. I don't like these much quicker and easier to have poppers all the way to the neck.
The other thing, is that you will want lots of them. For these reasons I always bought tesco or asda etc because they are cheap, wash well, can dry etc... and if serious poo explosion, you can just chuck them out.

carrielou2007 · 29/12/2009 09:55

Asda are quite thin and don't wash that well, they fade and bobble quite quickly. For the first few months baby will grow out of things far quicker than they wear out of them though!

I've bought lots this time round and body suits for the first few months. What I did for dd from about a year when clothes would last a bit longer is just buy Asda stuff for play/holiday clothes.

Next and Boots have lovely babygrows, nice thick materia with foldover mits. Mamas and Papas very nice but unless you can stock up in one of the cheapy outlet stores very expensive!!

Longtalljosie · 29/12/2009 10:01

Next, surprisingly, do very good quality cotton babygros. I had some as a present and was very impressed...

lucysnowe · 29/12/2009 10:03

I love the Next ones; they have nice fairly unisex ones that include the turny over cuffs. They last ages.

DoesntTheTurkeyDragOn · 29/12/2009 10:05

Don't get too many in a newborn size. You may end up with a baby elephant like I did.

winnybella · 29/12/2009 10:16

Don't get Petit Bateau- they are tiny and get even smaller after you wash them.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 29/12/2009 10:34

I agree with winnybella about Petit Bateau ones - they were far too skinny and shrunk in the wash for us too!

saladfingers · 29/12/2009 10:54

Next are brilliant as the cuffs turn over and you wont need scratch mittens which are a bugger to keep on. They wash brilliantly and are sized well too. Can't beat Asda vests at £5 for 7 either. I think M&S are a little bit on the small size personally althou good quality

Deemented · 29/12/2009 11:14

Asda have a massive sale on at the moment - 7 vests for £2.50, 3 babygros for £2 - really can't go wrong.

VanillaIce · 29/12/2009 12:14

Thanks everyone - can I ask another question? How do you dress a newborn? Is it a vest/bodysuit under the babygro? And does the vest have little sleeves? I know I sound clueless! Baby due in Feb so will still be cold...

Deemented · 29/12/2009 12:25

I have both long and short sleeved vests - long for when i'm planning on going out, short for when we are at home, underneath babygros. Generally the rule is one more layer then you would wear.

No sleeved vests i would generally use in spring/summertime.

ImSoNotTelling · 29/12/2009 12:55

Aw...

Nappy
Vest = bodysuit I have always just used short sleeved ones in all seasons
Babygro

Trick with babies is layering, so if cold I would put other clothes socks etc on top of that lot. Little hat good for winter baby.

On the little outfits front, depends what sort of person you are. I am lazy and my babies spend all their early months in babygros, they're so easy. Others like to dress them up in proper trousers skirts etc etc when they are small. My advice is wait and see how you go, don't spend £££ on little outfits then when it comes to it you might be too tired to dress them all up, then on top of everything else you feel guilty about the £££

Deemented right one layer more than you, don't overheat. To tell if they are warm enough put hand down top and feel - their hands and feet are often cooler than the rest of their body.

It's so exciting, I'm all excited for you

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 29/12/2009 14:20

I used shortsleeveed vests under a babygro most of the time but if it was exceptionally cold then a longsleeved vest would be worn - I found it hard to find longsleeved vests when I had my boys though.
vest, babygro and a nice cosy cardigan if chilly and then I would pop socks on top and a nice warm jacket and hat when going out and about.
Buy plenty of vests and babygros as you will probably have several changes each day due to nappy leaks or milky regurgitations. Having plenty will save you the stress of not being able to lay your hands on what you need at any given time and then you can bung them all in the wash at the end of the day.

I am excited for you too!

GhoulsAreLoud · 29/12/2009 14:35

Avoid Boots babygrows unless you have a long, skinny baby. DD was popping out of hers before her feet ever reached the toes!

lucy101 · 29/12/2009 14:58

I have just been given 4 huge boxes of used baby clothes from different girlfriends - much more than I know what to do with actually so will be freecycling a load.

What I have noticed from sorting through is that out of all the brands there (boots, tesco, next, really everything) the John Lewis ones are the only ones that are still lovely and soft after lots of washes.

If I need to buy any new ones, or people want to buy me anything I would say only JL - the difference in quality is very significant indeed.
