Sharp stabbing pains in cervix

I'm 36 weeks, baby is head down and in a good position. Over the last week or so I've been getting bouts of sharp, dagger like pains at the cervix area; the pains last only a second but the bout usually lasts about 20 minutes or so. They are sharp enough to draw breath but not really what I would describe as painful.
Can someone enlighten me as to what these are ?

I had these with dd but they didn't lead to imminent labour.

I hope it doesn't lead to labour - I want to enjoy my 4 weeks of maternity leave before she comes ! Are they braxton hicks ? I haven't had any of those.

BH are pains across your bump.

I had this in my last pregnancy towards the end and had 2 different explanations.

  1. babies head is bobbing on the cervix as it settles into it's position - from my GP.
  1. tis the cervix getting ready for birth, softening or something - from midwife.

I quite liked the pain, was such a weird feeling.

Oh and I went a week overdue!

i had a debrief ref my last birth and the midwife told me the pains i had which are like yours, felt like knitting needles being pushed up me! is the cervix softening and flattening out for the babys arrival. i got them from around 35 weeks onwards.i was told it was nothing to worry about and a normal part of your body getting ready for labour. not looking forward to that part again and the spd i get.im 17+3 now.

hope this helps and good luck with the rest of the pregnancy

Yep I had these for a few weeks leading up to labour - I used to call them Fanny Kicks thinking the baby was pushing/kicking my cervix!

Sounds like others have more medical knowledge on this than me but it all sounds perfectly normal and doesn't mean labour is imminent. (I've started getting them already with DC2 and I'm 32 weeks)

I had those for the last 3 or 4 weeks of my preggnancy too.
