THRUSH :(

Obviously been eating too many sweet treats this Christmas as I woke up yesterday with a raging case of thrush

What can you do about it when pregnant? Same options as non-pregnant but without the Diflucan option? Don't really want to go to the GP unless I really, really have to - would rather use an over-the-counter remedy or alternative remedy.

Can anyone offer any words of advice please??

OTC pessary and cream is fine. I had it prescribed by gp and sent DH to buy it on another occasion as pharmacist would not sell it to a pg woman (even though he had a record of GP giving it to me a few weeks earlier).

You can use canestan pessary and creams, which you can buy over the counter. However, the pharmacist won't sell you them if you're pregnant. So..... you can either not disclose that info, but ideally you'd see your midwife or gp to confirm it is thrush - then you get free treatment!!

Tea tree oil in a bath is also good.

Hope that helps?

BTW, how many weeks are you?

A x

Great, thanks - that's really helpful. Will send DH to chemist later.

Am coming up to 12 weeks. How about you?

if you're using the pessary, use your fingers rather than the applicator to push it in just to be careful. I had thrush in both pregnancies and this is the only concern the dr had.

Am 5+5wks, but been spotting for last week - kinda preparing myself for the worst :-(

CantThinkofFunnyName · 28/12/2009 14:55

I'm 38+4 wks and had the most horrendous case of thrush a week ago. Canesten pessary and cream were used (which I sent DH to buy for me as I couldn't walk the thrush was so bad). I also applied ice packs to the area, wiped myself regularly with cotton wool soaked in diluted tea tree oil and it all really helped.

Cleared after 2 days (but 2 days of hell) and then continued to the use the cream externally for a week.

Sorry to hear that amy, keeping my fingers crossed for you

Can't - what dilution of tea tree did you use? I have some cream and some tea tree, so I'll make a start with both of those tonight.

Thanks.

Cream is okay if GP prescribes and I can recommend a salty bath to relieve itching....

LuckyC · 29/12/2009 10:52

Second the poster who said watch out and use fingers and not applicator for the pessary.

Oh my gosh I totally sympathise! I'm 20+1 weeks and had it twice already. Sooo frustrating! My GP prescribed a 3 day course of pessaries (1 a night for 3) because it just wouldnt go. But also used the cream and avoided wearing tight jeans/leggings whilst I had it. Stick to Bridget Jones knickers and trackies!
