Teaching - When to tell Pupils?

Hi all

I'm a primary school teacher who teaches 9 and 10 year olds. I'm normally a skinny size 10 and therefore am showing now at nearly 15 weeks. When we go back to school I will be 16 weeks. Some of the childrne have already started commenting on 'miss getting fatter'! Should I tell my class or wait?

What do you all think?

I told my class at 12 weeks, they were excited and it helped explain a few things/ get me out of a few things. But mostly, they weren't that bothered. Some children in other classes were still finding out I was pregnant and looking surprised when I was 37 weeks!!!! God knows what they thought was happening!

How old are the children that you teach?

I told the teenagers I taught after the 20 week scan, a few had sussed it out, but not all and some didn't really realise till quite late (though I wasn't huge till near the end and disguised with baggy jumpers etc.). The primary kids I teach I didn't tell till as late as I could, and again some of them didn't realise till very late. Seemed to be the ones with younger siblings who were more aware and interested etc.!

Think that is why some of mine are intrigued as 3 of the class of 25 have had younger bros and sis born in the last 12 months!

I waited til after my 20 week scan too - some weren't a bit bothered, and others ask me about it virtually every lesson. Have had a few hands on belly and a few awkward questions but in the main, the kids have been lovely and keep offering to fetch and carry stuff for me (anything to get out of class though).
Finishing end of Jan at 35 weeks, can't wait.

I'm 20 weeks and unusally big, I teach primary and not a single chil has noticed! A lot of parents have congratulated me though. I'm personally witing 'til I'm asked-maybe they're just too self-absorbed to care..

i teach secondary and told them at thirteen weeks - some of them had guessed and I was sick of not being honest with them about why I was so tired and grumpy. now they are all being quite lovely and offering to carry things and asking me how I am etc - it's been a great classroom management tool!

I told mine when I was starting to show and parents were noticing! I was about 20 weeks. The children (yr 3) hadn't noticed a thing though.

I'm similar to you too blue, I teach 8-9 year olds and am now 16 weeks. I only told 1 friend at school, 1 other guessed and the head finally approached me on the last day to ask!!
Not sure when to tell the class, but will try to wait till 20 week scan as I have had problems in the past.
The down side is I was at MIL on boxing day and everyone noticed as I was larger than SIL who is 29 weeks!!!

I waited until the school had formulated a plan about when to advertise my role etc. I knew that as soon as I told the children, the parents would want to know when my maternity leave was going to start, and who my replacement was going to be. It was easier to wait and tell them when I had some answers.
