acid reflux - any magic cures?

3rd trimester acid reflux is awful. Every time I lie down my food comes back up, and sometimes when I'm not sitting completely upright too.

I've tried Gaviscon Advance but can't bear the taste or sensation of it.

Does anyone have any magic solutions??? xxxxxxxxx

Horrible, isn't it? Zantac works for me when Gaviscon doesn't.

FoxyRevenger · 23/12/2009 14:23

I get Omeprazole from my GP, nothing else stops it - I find Gaviscon stops a lot of the burning but you can still feel the actual acid coming up.

eating little and often seemed to reduce my indigestion

westlondongirl · 23/12/2009 14:42

If it's really bad you should talk to your GP. I have had severe reflux since I was a teenager and take omeprazole & ranitidine (zantac) which I was told to keep taking as they are safe in pregnancy. They have helped enormously. In terms of lying down I have to have at least two pillows under my head or the reflux gets worse. You can also raise the head of your bed. Hope you get some relief soon.

I find that gaviscon does work, although I agree that it's absolutely foul tasting! Before my nausea went at 15 weeks it actually used to make me throw up. Have you tried drinking cold milk or yoghurt? Also try and avoid spicy food or anything too acidic (orange juice gives me terrible hearburn) It's boring but bland food seems to make mine much less of a problem. Also don't let yourself get hungry.......that makes mine bad too.

Thanks everyone, went to Boots to ask if they do a tablet form of Gaviscon but apparently the tablets contain sodium which can cause high blood pressure - not good

I'm going to see GP tomorrow - if they are open??

warthog · 23/12/2009 19:38

omeprazole will stop it. you can get it otc as zanprol i think.

tribpot · 23/12/2009 19:39

Zantac.

Chocolate Frijj.

Huge sympathies it is dreadful.

warthog · 23/12/2009 19:42

oh yes - MUST raise head of bed.

warthog · 23/12/2009 19:42

avoid your food triggers like very fatty meals, for me, lots of carbs.

StantonLacy · 23/12/2009 19:43

Fruit flavoured Rennies...like manna from heaven ! Seriously, they are the only thing that works for me, Gaviscon just made me want to vom...good luck.

stigofthedump · 23/12/2009 19:51

YOP, always had a big bottle and had fridge raid during night

MollieO · 23/12/2009 20:03

Have you tried both versions of Gaviscon? I couldn't stand the minty one but the aniseed one was tolerable.

mumbot · 23/12/2009 20:18

Hi mollie it's the opposite for me, the aniseed version is just awful, but its the gloopy, snotty sensation of drinking it that makes me feel worse

Not thought about Rennies but do they contain sodium too? Will ask GP tomorrow.

I can only stomach the mint Gaviscon, taken with a very deep breath and washed down with a gulp of water straight afterwards. I think this may dilute it some what but is the only way I can take it. Don't really notice the diff between normal and advance apart from the consistency of advance is much gloopier so has to be taken from spoon!!

StantonLacy · 23/12/2009 21:17

Hi Mumbot, the Rennies packaging does state that they are suitable for pregnancy and the midwife okayed them for me last pregnancy and this one....hope I haven't been passing on duff information ! Must admit, did not look at the sodium content...will go and check now ( wanders off to look at the huge Fruit Rennie stockpile in my kitchen)

mumbot · 24/12/2009 15:04

Hi, went to doctors this morning, she rolled her eyes at the pharmacists suggestion that the sodium content was too high. It's OK in pregnancy, even says so on the packet! So now have some big waxy tablets to chew over xmas - yuk - better than almost being sick every 5 minutes I guess!

Good idea about Rennies too.

xxxxxx

merry xmas everyone
