So. Natal Hypnotherapy CDs. Any good?

I've just been given a set.

Usually I'm a little cynical about things like hypnotherapy. (Note, big package disclaimer from inside one CD - "This is in no way associated with HYPNOBIRTHING")

Has anyone used these and if so what did you think?

Can't comment on those CDs specifically but have had hypnotherapy and used other CDs. It is a really powerful therapy and brilliant for changing patterns of behaviour and beliefs - far easier than relying willpower alone.

These CDs get good reviews on Amazon. I would use them and see how you get on. I should imagine you will be pleasantly surprised. Maybe listen to them on headphones when you go to sleep every night.

Thankyou Speckledeggy

I'm certainly going to try them - no doubt to the vast amusement/possible disbelief of DH tonight - I'm willing to try anything that may calm my mental state during and after pregnancy!

I used it - or it might have been another one and I didnt like this one I cant remember sorry! Anyway, I listened to it as I fell asleep last night and it really helped. The techniques it gives you for working through the contractions worked really well for me. It sounds a bit cheesy but things like imagining you are blowing out the pain in a big black cloud / breathing in light type thingy. It helped keep me calm and focus on my breathing.

It also taught me to think about it in terms of something to relax into and that would pass - something I did not think logically about in my first labour.

Speckledeggy · 22/12/2009 22:31

Try and keep an open mind and 'believe' it will help. Like Peppapig says, some of it will probably sound a bit cheesy but they use scripts in hypnotherapy (ie. say things in a certain way) so they imprint on the old grey matter.

My poor DH is used to me listening to some CD or another. If you tell yours it's to help you from chopping off parts of his anatomy while you're in labour he may take a bit more seriously!

JasHook · 23/12/2009 09:54

Speckledeggy heh, yes, possibly the "you may get to keep your fingers unbroken at the very least" argument may win through.

peppapig It'll probably be the cheesiness that gets to me first! I will probably snort and snigger through it the very first time, then become more sober and dedicated as the actual date approaches!!

I used natal hypnotherapy for both my previous pregnancies and births and also for conceiving my current pregnancy and my previous one (sounds confusing - have had 2 babies and now preg with no 3!!!) It definately helps - I felt really relaxed and calm - no worries about giving birth and totally confident in my body's ability to give birth safely and naturally. It encourages you to follow your own instincts. With the conceptions - I had really irregular cycles and very short luteal phases of less than 7 days, so conceiving should have been really tricky. However I fell first time after using the cd. Husband uses now to help deal with stress and depression symptoms.
I'm also midwife so have seen the benefits for other women too - certainly no harm in trying it and can have a really positive outcome, so be open minded and give it a whirl!!!

Thanks for starting this thread.

I just got the birth prepartion CD too and am wondering the same thing. Sorry to hijack, but I was wondering whether the CDs were enough on their own without doing the classes.

I've just finished listening to the CD and it's fine, but I can't see how it's going to have a large impact without more information or training.

Anyone with any experience of using this for birth who can advise?

urbanewarrior · 15/01/2010 21:08

I just listened to the natal hypnotherapy cds a few times before having DD and it really did help. Good luck

becks130 · 15/01/2010 22:19

I got the CD last week and have found it really helpful, I have recommends not to use it before bed but it has really helped me sleep. Good Luck x

p.s How far along are you??

growingweeble · 16/01/2010 16:31

The only time I find time to use it is just before bed as well. I'm 32 weeks--How about you becks130?

JasHook · 17/01/2010 11:47

They make me sleepy too. And actually it's really good for getting back to sleep when I wake up in the night for a trip to the loo! Not sure whether that was entirely the intent...

I've been using the "pregnancy relaxation" one for a few weeks now (I'm 32 weeks as well)

growingweeble I'm 35+4 weeks and I've been using it since 34 weeks.

Hi, I'm using CD as I felt really nervous about birth of first baby (notice the past tense!!). I'm due in March & have been listening 2 or 3 times a week &, although they are a bit weird maybe, and I'm not very good at picturing all the 'relaxing images' I feel far less nervous and am quite confident that I'll be chilled for the birth, no matter what happens. I'm also reading the book & it's quite honest in saying it doesn't promise you won't need pain relief or intervention but it does help you handle anything that comes up & question any decisions that are being made, rather than blind acceptance.
I think they're worth a few listens and get your birth partner involved too!
Even if they don't work, they are very relaxing after a long day at work
Good Luck

I listened to the CD's for the birth of my second child.

I LOVED them, it was my special time of relaxation and bonding with my unborn baby.

It definitely helped me have a more relaxed approach to the birth and I felt mentally more able to cope, and the birth went better second time around.

janephilips · 30/04/2010 13:38

I have used these for both my births and had a fantastic experience. I really feel the CDs made all the difference.

I was petrified with my first birth and my midwife recommended the CDs. I cried when I first listened to them as i had never believed that birth could be anything but horrendous, and then they became a regular part of my routine. I went from being petrified to having a home birth without even using gas anf air!

I wish all pregnant women were given these as routine as I am sure it would help so many women have a good birth.

Goodluckbear · 30/04/2010 14:13

I just saw this thread - I was wondering if any of you guys have a link to the CDs you would recommend on Amazon? Don't want to buy the wrong ones....

Cheers,
GLB

Fayrazzled · 30/04/2010 14:24

I used them for my first baby and I felt it was bollocks- made no difference to the highly medicalised birth I ended up having. The time spent listening each evening was nice and relaxing though.

Montifer · 30/04/2010 22:43

I thought they were fantastic and believe they helped me to have a very straightforward labour throughout which I felt (mostly) in control.

Found them really relaxing to listen to and think they helped me to enjoy my pg too.

Planning to use them this time round although finding time might not be quite so easy with a toddler around now
