'Positive' triple test. Should I have an amnio?

My triple test result has come back as 1 in 65 (compared to 1 in 170 for an average pregnant 38yo). DH is adamant that I should have an amnio, I'm not keen to have a needle stuck in my stomach and feel that 1 in 65 is pretty good odds. Whatever happened to just assuming that everything will be fine? Should I just do it because it'll reassure dh (and me, I guess)?
I hate the overmedicalisation of pregnancy (and the way people keep telling me how old I am) and I'm fascinated by the disparity between the information from our wonderful midwife and from the not very impressive registrar at the hospital, but I'll be sent to St Thomas's for the amnio, so I should see someone competent (and if all goes well I'm having a home birth)
But is all this necessary, or are they just doing it because they can?

Dear Dannie, I am thinking of you and wishing you all the best for Thursday. Hope it is not too traumatic for you and that you have some good support. Just wondering how you could have possibly created your own trauma? Take care, Cam

WideWebWitch · 15/06/2003 11:55

Dannie, I'm also thinking of you for Thursday. You're right to take dh's view with a pinch of salt by the sound of his sports day delusions and I agree with Cam, you've not 'created your own trauma'.

good luck Dannie ,thinking of you.mabs

St Thomas's were great. I was particularly impressed to be asked specifically whether I was sure I wanted an amnio, and told that pressure by my home hospital didn't mean I had to go through with it. But since I was there, i thought I might as well. It's a boy, he looks fine so far, and they'll let me know the test results next week. DH tells me he's exhausted. DS is all excited, I think I want him for my birth partner instead. I wonder if DH is jealous. But probably best not to dwell on that one

So far so good, Dannie - that must be a huge comfort for you. Hope that the next few days go quickly for you and that the results can put an end to all of the worry and not knowing one way or the other. Let us know how you get on.

emwi · 19/06/2003 20:28

The baby's fine (well, he could still be born with his father's looks and his mother's temper...) My next goal, apart from meeting this week's deadlines and mowing the lawn, is to stay out of hospital from now on.
Thanks so much everyone for your support

Hi, I'm new here, and looking for other older mothers, over 40 (had my first at 35 and second at 37, which I didn't think too elderly then). I'm just 44 and nearly nine weeks. My fiancee is 35 and childless, which is why we're going for it again. Keep your fingers crossed, prayers or good vibes, please, and hope to hear from you.

CAM · 22/08/2003 17:09

How fantastic esme1, I had my second dd at 40 and she's now 6.

Lindy · 22/08/2003 20:13

Hi Esme1 - I'm an older mum, 43 when I had my first (& last!!) baby who is now a two year old toddler. Good luck with your pregnancy.

esme1 · 05/09/2003 19:24

Lindy, CAM, thanks for replying, there don't seem to be many of my age out there... I do have a friend having her first in Nov at 43 and 1/2. Met the mw yday and she said there are another 3 pg 43-45 yeare old in Hackney so will try to connect us!

bluecow · 08/09/2003 12:30

My consultant said when i was pregnant last year with ds (I was 38)- 'don't have the blood test; it'll just come back positive'. I knew exactly what he meant - that your age wil skew it and worry the pants off you unnecessarily. I think that's what it's done to you.

bunny2 · 08/09/2003 21:40

Bluecow, could the same be said about a nuchal scan? I'm having one at 12 wks and am dreading it.
