Anterior placenta

I got told at a basic scan I had last week that my placenta is at the front. I'm 19+1 today and have my 20week scan next week which I'm sure will confirm this. But just wondering, how can you know whether its the placenta which is muffling movements or that baby just isnt moving??

I had this with dd1. You get used to the feel of movement that is right for your baby.
In retrospect I know now that I felt alot less movement with dd1 than dd2 & if they had been the other way round I might have been a bit panicky. At the time I was used to whaT normal movement from dd1 was iyswim

I had an anterior placenta with both my pregnancies and barely felt my 2nd moving until gone 20 weeks. Try not to worry, easier said than done though I know.

TulipsAndTinsel · 22/12/2009 12:36

i had this with my third. as the pregnancy progressed i was able to feel almost as much as with the other two, although oddly you couldn't see movement until very late in the pregnancy.

after 20 odd weeks the baby gets big enough to be felt on either side and above the placenta and then you'll be driven mad by the constant poking and prodding

LastOfTheMulledWine · 22/12/2009 12:38

Once movement is regular (bit later on than you are now), you do get used to normal movement for your baby and as they get bigger you feel them in all sorts of different places.

Please don't worry.

I meant to say with an anterior placenta I did't feel movement until 22 week - it can be a good bit later.

Thanks for the reassurance ladies! I need a kick up the arse and stop worrying!! Have any of you used a doppler at home?

Just to add my own recent experience - I was told I have an anterior placenta and I didn't start feeling really hefty movements until about 24 weeks or so - until then there were tiny flutters that I could easily put down to digestion. However, now at 28 weeks there seems to be no stopping her, and DH even felt her when I was snuggled up against his back this morning!

I really miss having an anterior placenta this time round. With DS the movements were gentle and lovely. With this one, he appears to be attempting to do an "Alien" and climb out via my belly button.

With DS1 I mostly felt the movements on either side rather than across the tum.

Chynah · 23/12/2009 13:32

I have an anterior placenta and feel nothing like as much movement as I did with DS. I do feel movement at the sides though (I'm 24 weeks). I have used a doppler at home successfully since about 10 weeks.

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm 20 weeks and have an anterior placenta. I know this because I had an amnio at 18 weeks.

What's worrying me is that I could feel movement really early on, around 13 weeks. For a few days after the amnio, I felt EVERYTHING. Now, I can hardly feel movement at all, maybe once or twice a day and even then I'm not sure whether it is the baby.

Does anyone know whether it's normal for the level of movement felt to increase after an amnio, then tailor off again? If it wasn't Christmas I'd give my midwife a call.

BlueBumpBlaze · 26/12/2009 23:47

Ha, never mind. He's started moving around again. I think he's bouncing off the sides.
