Best place to be measured for a nursing bra?

Hello - 37 weeks preggers and I need to get a couple of nursing bras. Where is a good place to go and can they really predict how bigs my norks will get once I'm breast feeding?!

I bought mine from m&s and they expanded quite alot with growth and fullness etc

somewhere that doesn't rely on a tapemeasure (at best its only an indication and different styles can make a HUGE difference to the size you actually need), and no - they can't really predict how big you'll wind up once you're milk is in. I was amazed at the difference when I finally got a properly fitted bra - and was suddenly aware of just how bad a job a lot of high street stores do.

Given I live in the middle of nowhere I now tend to fit my own. When I had DD I ordered a selection of styles and sizes from FigLeaves just after I gave birth, fitted them myself and sent back the vast majority that didn't fit. Rigby and Peller also have some online guides, and a phone number for additional maternity advice.

www.bravissimo.com/default.aspx is a good place too - they fit bras properly, i.e. without a tape measure! They have fitted me for my bras, and having been told I was a 50E from M&S they then "measured" me again, and said that I was a 40GG - much nicer! They are experienced with larger boobs and when they fitted me for my maternity bras were very good about it all. I am definitely going there for my nursing bras!

I'm told by a few friends that the NCT bra fitting service is good. I can't give a personal recommendation though as only 34 weeks myself.

Bravissimo
Go now as my DD came three weeks early and I had no bras to wear and was in utter agony- my boobs hurt more than my bits!

MrsBadger · 22/12/2009 14:04

buy two Bravado now to start with, then Bravissimo a few weeks after the birth.

round the bust area usually the best

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 22/12/2009 14:08

NCT bra-fitting service is very good.

John Lewis also good, but often don't have as wide a range.

sorry didn't mean to be silly.
Having a bad day!
as a proper reply - OP - where are you based? Often some maternity units at hospitals provide maternity fittings from people who come into the hospital to fit - worth asking your MW about this?

CMOTdibbler · 22/12/2009 14:16

If you have a small, local lingerie shop, then they are usually the best places as the ladies in them do a very personal fit, and really know their stock.

Mothercare and M&S are usually shocking ime

MrsBadger · 22/12/2009 14:24

Now, my local lingerie shop did an awful job fitting me for a nursing bra - I saw them at 38wks once the baby had 'dropped' and they sold me a 36D.
It was ugly and rode up and felt too big in the cup but they promised it would be fine after the birth, once my milk came in etc.

I remained unconvinced and two days later I went to Bravissimo - they sold me a 32DD which looked fab and fitted perfectly for the following 18m of feeding...

(I exchanged the 36D for a pair of pyjamas, which were much more use...)

SnotChristmasYetBaby · 22/12/2009 14:30

With both DCs I only bought sleep bras for the first few weeks (not exactly out jogging at that time!), then got measured as needed. Bravissimo are fab.

I was a 40G at my first measurement this time when DS was 4 weeks, and 12 weeks later am sitting here in my usual size of 34E.

If you're on a budget, please don't splash your cash too much just yet. Breasts can change a great deal from week to week for the first few months.

Tangle · 23/12/2009 00:09

Just as an observation re. the multi-size bras, IMO they work much better if you're towards the middle of the range rather than at one end. I was a 32F pre-baby and found them really unsupportive. Worth a try, but from my experience I wouldn't rely on them.

If you do buy before your milk comes in, don't forget to allow space for a breastpad as well (assuming you're planning on using them).

You will most likely change a lot in the first few weeks (ribs shrink, boobs grow) - but don't assume you'll get back to normal within any given time frame. It took me 2 years!

bluebell6 · 23/12/2009 13:29

Always use Bravissimo normally however they didnt have a good range of feeding bras when I was pg a couple of years ago so ended up ordering from NCT catalogue.

They were excellent and advised me to order bras two cup sizes up from what I was when pg - they looked massive when I got them, but you def need the extra space!!!!

bigpreggybelly · 23/12/2009 13:37

Don't get more than a couple, keep them in their boxes with the receipts. So if they turn out to be the wrong size, you should be able to return them.
