HELP - can anyone recommend a laxative that can be taken in pregnancy (14 wks)....

5 days now and counting - GP pescribed an orange flavoured fibre drink but it just makes me sick...

I am eating moutains of fruit and raw veg and have been for weeks but nothing is helping.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated as we approach Chistmas!

fibrogel! not sure on spelling!!! worked a treat when i couldnt even sit down . not orange flavoured either more syrupy!

MamaLazarou · 22/12/2009 09:53

Warm/hot water with a slice of lemon first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything else.

fififolle · 22/12/2009 09:54

Drink plenty of water, eat prunes, try to relax afap - easier said than done. Also a warm bath may help.

Poledra · 22/12/2009 09:54

How about licorice (sp?)? I found that helped, though did have a tendency to make me somewhat flatulent too

ItchyTits · 22/12/2009 10:29

Lots of water. And I hate to recommend exercise, but it helps! Fruit and sometimes peppermint tea can help.

A doctor told me it's ok to take lactulose while PG, which I had after gyny surgery and it was very effective. You can get it from any good chemist.

I know I should be embarrassed about being windy. Wish I was, but it's such a relief!

LaTurkey · 22/12/2009 10:35

Fybogel. It's not in every chemist, but I do know Lloyds do it.

cece · 22/12/2009 10:36

Fybogel will do the trick.

TaurielTest · 22/12/2009 10:39

It sounds like fybogel you've been prescribed already. It is rank - the lemon flaver I found slightly less foul than the orange flavour, if that helps, but if you can stop yourself gagging on it, like people say above, it will work - combined with big glasses of water. You can also try linseed by the spoonful - I put it on my porridge and mixed it into flapjacks!

GinaFB · 22/12/2009 10:43

Yes it is Fybogel, I really can't get on with it.

I will try all the suggestions above and see if I can get some lactulose just in case! Can you get linseed at boots or do I need to go to a health food shop??

Would prune juice work?

Thanks ladies your wisdom is appreciated

Try orange juice and water - inch of oj in bottom of pint glass, top up with tap water. Works for me every time!

Hello Ladies,

First time poster, first time pregnant! Due May 2010 and felt i had to stop lurking and start posting- particularly on this thread!

I had the same problem and it was terrible!!

I was advised to keep any remedies as natural as possible when pregnant.

GINAFB the best advice i got for the problem was prune juice. honestly, a large glass of the stuff downed in one and two hours (ish) later believe me you will be cured!!

It has been a godsend and i highly recommend it!!

give it a go- its easy!

GinaFB · 22/12/2009 11:32

glitterkitten you are due the month before me! Also a first time mum! Good luck!!

I am off to Tesco at lunch to get prune juice! Fingers crossed it works - its the worst feeling ever!!!

Thanks GinaFB ! and good luck to you too!!

first1 · 22/12/2009 11:34

I had this terribly a couple of weeks ago! I started a thread on it too because literally got so bad I tore a bit Doc prescribed lactulose and it is gooooooood stuff!

bearcrumble · 22/12/2009 11:46

I've been given lactulose too. It does help a bit but I still find that I'm really constipated and... this is really embarrassing.. sometimes I have to actually put on disposable surgical gloves and help the poo out with my finger - it's like rocks.

GinaFB · 22/12/2009 12:00

bearcrumble you poor thing - I am not quite as bad as that yet but I'm getting there hence my plea for help on here!

Its annoying considering the amount of oranges etc I am eating!!

I've been getting Movicol from my GP. It doesn't really taste of anything much so you can have it neat or mix it with some squash. Has been doing the trick for me. It hasn't given me wind either.

jardins · 22/12/2009 14:09

Linseed - one or two spoonfuls for breakfast with yoghurt or water. Three glasses of water for breaky too. Works really well!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 22/12/2009 15:54

My mum swears by kiwi fruits - 2 of them for bad cases, before bed, is her prescription. Worth a try I suppose! And yes do make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids (any type really).
