we've had really bad black ice along the pavement outside of our house (and beyond) since friday morning and my DH tells me its v v slippy. not sure how i am going to walk to the station (10 mins walk away) tomorrow to get to work and to hospital appointment up in london. i might see if the office dont mind if i work from home tomorrow as would hate to fall over in the ice.. am I being a wuss or eminently sensible?

Don't to bloody work. I'm sure they will understand! Rearrange your hospital appointment, it's really not worth the risk!

howdidthishappenthen · 21/12/2009 21:51

Me too.Have been stuck inside with a toddler for two days in consequence. Really hoping for better weather soon. Sigh

mama2moo · 21/12/2009 21:53

Me too! Im 34 weeks now and we have had black ice since Sunday. Its just snowing again a bit now.

I bought loads of cheap salt in Asda today and have been using it on my path when I go somewhere. I have a mw appointment tomorrow so will take my salt with me and probably get dp to take me in the car so he can drop me at the door.

I am also wearing my crocs because they seem to have a bit of grip to them.

curlytoes · 21/12/2009 21:56

Poor you. I think you are right to be cautious. My husband said it was very slippy outside our door today and then promptly fell over - as if to emphasize his point! He was fine bless him. If you must go out, I would go mad stuck in for too long, wear the most dazlingly practical footwear you can and maybe enlist a sturdy footed friend to lean on. Go slow, hang onto stuff. Take care. But if you can bear it it's prob safer to hibernate instead.

curlytoes · 21/12/2009 21:58

mama2moo is right. Salt really does work. You do need a big bag of cheap stuff. You'll go mad with a grinder and Maldon sea salt.

thanks everyone, your comments have put my mind at rest. am clearly not being paranoid about this bad weather! i will work from home tomorrow if there is no let up re the ice and i'll re-arrange the glucose testing appt (i dont imagine it will matter if I get it a few days late) and just to try stay away from the mince pies here at home!

will have to go out weds as have gp appointment

carrielou2007 · 21/12/2009 22:28

I'm nearly 38 weeks and had to post some things (last posting day) today, it's only a mile and a half away but over a railway bridge...also had to call in at Morrisons on the way-ish back it took dd and I (she's almost 3) nearly 3 hours!!

Stay in, we will be tomorrow!!!

maybebaby23 · 22/12/2009 00:14

Im 38 weeks and housebound Not stepped out of the door for the last 2 days!! Its driving me MAD but can't risk slipping on the ice..it's scary! I love the cold and snow but not ice

Miia · 22/12/2009 07:17

I'm also 35 weeks but have continued life as normal minus very long walks. Just make sure I'm wearing something practical, e.g. hiking boots and avoiding the icy bits and walking on grass as long as practical as not everything is covered in ice. Unlike my usual walks this means that I actually pay attention where I'm going rather than texting or chatting on the phone. Yesterday was also more slush than actual ice, but have a feeling my last day at work today will involve a very slow walk to the station and back...

Thandeka · 22/12/2009 08:00

I am supposed to be taking car in for a much needed service today. Trouble is will mean tramping streets for several hours while waiting for it to be done (garage far enough away to make going home not worthwhile!) so am thinking of postphoning cept that means car won't be serviced before our ling Christmas journeys. It's a dilemma. Plus I have an antenatal appt at the hospital this arvo which is conviently located up the hill away from public transport! Bah! I think wellies and lots of layers (padding for any slips!) are order of the day!

hurrydownthechimneytonight · 22/12/2009 08:20

35 weeks pregnant and have not left the flat since sunday although its a hill to my front door and any time i go out my neighbours ask if i need anything!

DH brings home what I need so as midwife said its safest to stay tucked up warm inside. Sure your managers will understand!

Fibilou · 22/12/2009 08:37

I've been walking 15 minutes to work in pretty bad ice so I'm afraid I fall under the "you're being a wuss" umbrella (I'm 35 + 3). Put on a pair of shoes with some grip on and you will be fine

MamaLazarou · 22/12/2009 08:40

Not being a wuss at all - stay in if you can, though it's boring. I'm 35wks and have only left the house once in the last week - my DH and cousin took me round the block to exercise me! My neighbour salted our steps and path so I won't slip, bless him. I'm hoping to get out today to do a bit of shopping.

hurrydownthechimneytonight · 22/12/2009 08:40

gosh i sound like a wuss now lol not going out... although i have no reason to venture outside anyway

JooLoo · 22/12/2009 18:10

I'm 34 weeks and fell over on the ice yesterday. No real damage done thankfully but I did feel a bit in shock for the rest of the day. Nothing wrong with staying indoors on the sofa if pavements not safe where you are. Or take someone along with you for a bit of support/confidence.

MamaLazarou · 23/12/2009 14:19

I slipped on the ice today, even though DH was holding me up! Luckily I landed on my knees (which are throbbing like hell). I don't plan to leave the house again until after the big thaw!

Snooch · 23/12/2009 14:29

I was about 7 and a half months pregnant when we had that huge dumping of snow in Feb this year, and I didn't go out for a week for fear of slipping.

Again, this time round, I haven't been out since Sunday for fear of slipping. And I'm not pregnant.

I'm a complete wuss.

sazlocks · 23/12/2009 14:34

I am with you OP on this one. I am 35 + 3 and have been out a couple of times but with grippy shoes and a very careful step. I know falling wouldn't be very clever but I am as worried about how (with my comical Mr Greedy style bump) I would get up off the floor without a crane

GeorgieBeans · 23/12/2009 16:39

I fell heavily on the ice while out for my morning constitutional (I'm 38 weeks) and landed on my bump. Felt dreadful until I saw the nurse a couple of hours later who said he was fine and probably hadn't even noticed - such is the power of amniotic fluid! People keep telling me to stay indoors but I'll go crazy without some exercise, so it's snow boots, verges where possible, and a more pedestrian pace from now on.
