What starter can I eat from this New Years Eve menu? The main courses and deserts are fine but it seems there's something I cant eat from every possible starter! Thanks

Soupe de Courge ~ Butternut squash and red pepper soup with a Roquefort cream swirl

Parfait d?Oie au Vin de Sauternes ~
A smooth pâté of goose and Sauternes served with apple cinnamon chutney
and French baguette

Assiette de Fromages et Charcuterie ~
A platter of French cheeses ? Roquefort & Camembert and cured meats ?
saucisson and Serrano ham with French baguette

Crevettes à l?Ail~ King prawns sautéed in garlic and chilli butter

Bourse au Fromage de Chevre ~ A filo parcel filled with melting goats cheese, onion marmalade and beetroot
with warm cranberry redcurrant sauce

If the goats cheese is cooked it will be fine - and there's nothing wrong with cooked prawns either

BlameItOnTheBogey · 21/12/2009 11:55

I think the soup (ask for it without the swirl) or the goats cheese would be fine. Goats cheese OK when cooked AFAIK.

LouLouH · 21/12/2009 11:57

Prawns are fine when cooked.. Or ask for soup without cream swirl.

first1 · 21/12/2009 11:57

Thanks! Think I'll go for the soup

cooked soft cheeses are fine - assuming melted means heated to above 75 degrees, the bacteria would be dead

SO THE bOURSE au fromage de chevre is fine, ditto the prawns.

that is one delicious list, how unfortunate that you are too pregnant to take full advantage!

memorylapse · 21/12/2009 13:31

would def say the soup without the swirl..and most definitely the prawns..Im possibly salivating at this menu

ziggyf · 21/12/2009 13:34

I'd go for any of them except the goose pate. Sounds yummy, what's on the menu for puddings? And the main course (my least favourite bit!).

Safest bet would be soup without swirl or the prawns but cooked goats cheese is also fine.

Should try to eat as little sea food as possible- has a lot of mercury in it.

first1 · 21/12/2009 14:09

It's at Cafe Rouge ladies If only I could eat all of it sits dreaming of all the yummy things pregnancy bans

soup is fine, ask for it unswirled if you like
prawns are fine
goats cheese is fine as is cooked

have fun (yum!)

NB re mercury in seafood, that really applies to fish at the top of the food chain (shark, marlin, swordfish) as they eat a lot of other fish and the heavy metals accumulate.
Small fish and prawns don't have enough in to worry about. Guidance here.

Crazycatlady · 21/12/2009 14:17

Ooh, yummy... I'd eat any of these foods while pregnant apart from the pate because of the vitamin A content (assume it's goose liver?).

Having said that, I might be a bit wary of cheeses and charcuterie that are being served at a chain restaurant as there are so many more stages from farm to table and therefore more opportunities for contamination.

If they were coming direct from the curing house or from Neals Yard say, then I'd eat the bloody lot and enjoy it (as I will be this Christmas, it's my second pregnant Christmas in a row and I'm NOT missing out on the cheese this year thank you very much..).

Prawns (cooked) are fine. The only seafood you need to keep to a minimum in pregnancy are the mercury heavy ones such as tuna, shark, swordfish and marlin.

So the soup is a good option. Enjoy, sounds lovely!

Second the comments on mercury in prawns. Research has shown prawns tend to have the lowest level mercury in all fish - often untraceable amounts and so no problem when pregnant.

Unpasturised cheese and charcuterie do pose a small risk to an unborn child and IMO are not worth the risk.
