Nuchal Scan Result 1 in 16

I had a nuchal scan and blood test yesterday. The nuchal measurement was fine 1.6mm and the doctor said everything looked ok. The baby was very lively in the scan. However once the blood results were taken into account this took my risk to 1 in 16.

Doctor is booking me in for a CVS tomorrow but I am having having second thoughts. Worried about miscarriage and what to do once I get the result.

Don't understand why if the nuchal measurement was fine the bloods are so different.
I am thinking of putting off the CVS for another week (if I did it this week I would get the result on xmas eve) and asking for another blood test in the meantime but don't know if that is just clutching at straws?

Would be grateful for any advice/experience people have.

Thanks

So sorry to hear that, as it sounds like it is very worrying for you.

Do you know what you would do if the CVS came back positive?

How will delaying the further test weigh on your mind, i.e. will your Christmas be ruined by the worry about it either way?

Will keep my fingers crossed for you and your baby.

mumandlovingit · 20/12/2009 20:14

i hope everything goes well for you with the cvs. ive had a few people have a similar experience lately. theyve had the cvs and everythings been fine just as the scan showed.

they worry you with such a high result but please be reassured that the cvs will give you a definite result so that you can plan for the future with your baby whatever the outcome.

if you put it off you will only worry more until youve had it done.

good luck and i hope everything works out well for you.xx

those were exactly the odds we were given after the nuchal scan. We opted for the CVS which was done 2 days later. Not a pleasant experience but not as horrible as i had imagined either.

We got the rapid results back the next day. All clear thankfully for Downs and the other trisomies. We were also able to tell the sex which was nice.

THe risk for miscarriage with a CVS is about 1%. it drops further if the doctor performing it is experienced at the procudure and it is done via the abdomen rather than the cervical route.

A downs risk of 1 in 16 equates to roughly 93% chance that your baby is perfectly healthy. In my situation i felt the miscarriage risk was justifed against the downs etc risk (7%).

I dont know what we would have done if our results had not come back normal but either way i would have wanted to know. Information is power if you know what i mean.

I hope it works out ok for you. In your situation i would probably have the test done before Xmas. If in your shoes i left it it would be all i would be thinking of over the xmas break.

Good luck.

I was told we had a 1 in 18 chance, based on the blood result. However, as I understand it, the blood results could indicate problems other than Downs too.

My heart goes out to you. I remember how awful I felt, from the moment they called to say there might be a problem until we got the all clear. Although the chance was 'only' 1 in 18, I felt very pessimistic about it and it was an awful time. However, in reality these odds are massively in your favour. Do try to hang on to the positive, the chances are everything is OK.

Our result came back negative for Downs, thankfully. It turned out that the blood result had actually been nothing to do with Downs - it was high as a result of a 'notch' on one of the arteries in the womb instead. I'm really grateful they found this, as then I was then able to be treated for it, and my healthy baby boy was born nearly a year ago now. If they had not found it, the blood supply to him might have been inhibited.

A friend recommeded the organisation ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices) to me at the time. Actually in the end I never used them because I only learnt about it the day before my results came through, but they're meant to be good, and you can call them for advice about anything to do with antenatal tests.

Personally, if it was me, I would want to get the result as soon as possible - the waiting was the worst part for me. Also, I remember I did feel physically exhausted after the CVS, much more than I expected. Do plan to take it easy for a day or so after if you can, in case you feel like this too. Might it be better to get this out of the way now, rather than possibly feel rubbish on Christmas day?

Sending you hugs xxxx

I don't know if you are anywhere near London but The Fetal Medicine Centre performs scans which are much more detailed than those done on the NHS. My 12 week scan cost £150 and was worth every penny - and you get the results of the scan and the blood test at the same appointment. Good luck. x

When my nucal scan came back with a high chance , plus the scan showed a ecogenic foci on the heart we were referred to the Fetal medical centre at St Georges, Tooting.

We had a detailed scan there all within a few days and all measurements etc were ok. - our Ds is a healthly 7 yr old.

If you are SW london you could consider asking for a referal there.

Good luck and best wishes .

I had a 1 in 4 chance with this pregnancy. With such high odds I didn't want to go through the pregnancy not knowing.

The poster above is right about chances of miscarriage - if person doing cvs does a lot the risks are a lot lower - the 1 in 100 is a national average.

I was lucky in having mine at fetal unit in st georges tooting. I didn't feel anything & had none of the cited side affects but still rested for 2 days. Sobbed like a baby during it though.

Anyway my results came back negative & has made my pregnancy so much easier if you know what I mean.

I know what you're going thru. I was in no mans land for a week & couldn't speak to anyone.

My very best wishes to you in whatever happens.

X

I had a 1:12 chance with this pregnancy. Me and DH decided that we needed to know as wouldn't continue the pregnancy should the results come back showing a problem. i had a CVS and although the risk of miscarriage scared me it was alot lower than the risk of having a child with a problem so we figured it was worth taking. I had mine at the Fetal Medicine Centre Harley Street and it was quick and although uncomfortable it wasn't painful.
My results came back clear which was a relief as the waiting for the result is torture but now we can relax a bit and look forward to meeting our little girl.

Good luck - hope it all works out for you.

Thanks everyone. I haven't heard from the hosp today anyway so I think I am going to go ahead with it but not this week. I would rather have the not knowing hanging over me rather than getting a bad result on xmas eve.

Hello, I also went to the FMC today and have been told I am high risk (1:11) due to 3.9 nuchal transparency measurement and absence of nasal bone. I feel pretty pessimistic about it all (although am very surprised by how many people get similar risk assessments and then go on to have healthy babies) and have decided to have CVS on Wednesday. It's whatever works best for you but the possibility of something not being right is hanging over me anyway, so I'd rather know for sure as soon as possible. Keeping fingers crossed for you BetteD

moneli · 21/12/2009 15:15

I mean surprised/reassured by positive outcomes

BetteD · 21/12/2009 20:14

Sorry you are going through the same thing moneli.
It's reassuring how many people get positive results after a high risk but I have to say I am feeling pessimistic.

I'm booked in for my test next tues. Good luck with your result I hope it is a positive one.

I had a nuchal scan that came back with a 1:22 risk with DD and 1:7 risk with DS3. The nuchal measurement was fine in both cases (1.6mm and 1.7mm) and there was a nasal bone present in both cases. But my PAPP-A was low - extremely low. Hence the result.

I had a CVS at the fetal medicine centre in Harley Street and the preliminary results came back in 24 hours. Everything was fine both times. Obviously something v peculiar with my blood.

Good luck and the chances are v much in your favour that everything will be fine.

I have no hesitation recommending the care and expertise of the fetal medicine centre.

Swedington · 21/12/2009 20:30

I forgot to say congratualtions on your pregnancy.
