Are highlights in pregnancy safe?

Hello,

Just wanted to get some opinions on if I should go ahead with appointment tomorrow. I am 11 weeks. Have spoken to my hairdresser and he says that because he only puts it on hair (not scalp) it is safe.

Have spoken to a number of people and some aviod at all cost and others regulary have hair dyed throughout pregnancy.

Last had roots done early August and I have waited until a bit further along. Should it be something I worry about or avoid? I have been pretty strict with myself with everything else.

Thanks in advance

perfectly safe. this harps back to the days when blonde dying was done with peroxide. it isn't any more so is perfectly safe.

I've been having mine done

my hairdresser said the only problem with dying your hair while pregnant is the difference in condition which can make the result variable.
no harm comes to baba as far as im aware!

confuddledDOTcom · 18/12/2009 00:48

I've always been under the impression it's because, as harleysmama says, the results are unpredictable in pregnancy rather than any health problem.

Totally fine. Think of all the pregnant hair stylists who deal with that stuff every day and have healthy babies.

My GP told me at my booking app't (10 wks) not to get my hair highlighted. I spoke with my girlfriend who is my stylist that same day and asked her - she proceeded to tell me she was 14 weeks pregnant and didn't see it as a problem. So I kept my app't and we happily compared early pregnancy symptoms, LOL.

I usually have a tint which does go on the scalp and wasn't happy to do this while pregnant so opted for highlights as the chemicals don't touch the skin. From reading lots on the web etc. it seems that there isn't any actual proof that dying your hair (where the chemicals do touch the skin) could be bad while pregnant so the advice not to do so is really very cautious. It's a personal choice like everything (I can't wait to get rid of all my grey again though!). I haven't noticed a change in the way my hair takes the chemicals while pregnant either but I guess some people have.

highlights are fine

somethinganything · 18/12/2009 07:20

I think they're fine - have had them in both pregnancies. As others have said, it doesn't touch the scalp just the hair, which is dead anyway. And I didn't particularly notice any difference in the way my hair reacted either

Perfectly safe.
BUT - be warned... I had mine done last week and I came out looking like a tabby cat as the colour only took in patches.....
seriously!

Perfectly fine. We really should stop worrying about every tiny litttle thing.

I'm a hairdresser and have dyed (including a full head bleach) my own hair through all three of my previous pregnancies with no problem. I will be colourng as normal through this one.

I have also coloured dozens of pregnant womens hair, again, with no problem.

There isn't any evidene whatsoever it causes problems.

I have been having my hair dyed regularly through both pregnancies. I think it is a myth that it can cause harm to the baby - there is no evidence about this at all.

BlingLoving · 18/12/2009 10:07

Call me shallow, but if I couldn't dye my hair while pregnant I think I'd give up ttc right now. Honestly. I have a friend who when asked about highlighting her hair while pregnant (she was 7 months at the time) tossed her gorgeous flowing locks and said, "I have to be pregnant for 9 months, it doesn't mean I have to look like shit too". She has a beautiful beautiful baby girl who turned 1 last week.

bigpreggybelly · 18/12/2009 11:48

I've continued to get mine done. Wouldn't have left the house if I hadn't continued to get my hair coloured!!

Highlights done touch the scalp anyway.

bigpreggybelly · 18/12/2009 11:48

Sorry, meant to say, highlights don't touch the scalp.

Thanks everyone just needed some reassurance. Have just got back from hairdressers and am very pleased with result!
