If you have to walk in the snow, how do you avoid going arse over tit in it?

I don't drive, so I have to walk DD (9) to and from school every day (I'm 37 wks)

I can kind of cope with the frost as I walk on the kerb stones which don't get slippery (for some reason), but I'm really shitting myself that it's going to snow tomorrow and Friday and I'm going to have to walk in the snow and end up slipping over.

I could get a taxi, but this is expensive and I'd have to get it to wait while I still walked into the school to take and get DD.

I don't want to ask the neighbours for a lift, as most are older people so I don't want them having to drive in the snow.

I could keep her off school, but she's not keen on this option as the last couple of days are the best ones aren't they??

I usually love the snow, it must be awful if you're permanently unsteady on your feet. Any ideas? How are you going to deal with it?

Ive been worrying about this too. The other day it was icy and i parked right outside the school gate but on the opposite side of the road, and still managed to slip halfway across the road! Luckily i didn't fall but i do worry as it wouldn't take much of a jolt to hurt my back at the mo (38 weeks)

I would get a taxi if you are able to afford to. 2 Days to go! Im looking forward to staying in all toasty warm when DD finishes!

Lets hope it doesn't snow til then!

Get Moon Boots.
I swear to god they cement you to the snow and are fairly funky when worn with skinny maternity jeans or leggings. They are a bit like wearing a duvet on your foot.

Yes, theyre expensive but I have worn mine a couple of weeks of the year now for 6 years and I love them!

When snow is, well, snow it's not too slippy though, right? I've done mannnny a school run (twenty minute walk each way) with no problems with fresh snow. Obviously, not wearing stilettos or anything .

The issue comes if (when, let's face it) it turns slushy then freezes overnight - voila! Ice rinks instead of pavements! Though, in my area, usually the main pavements/roads have been gritted/salted by the time this change happens.

Bearing in mind you've only got the next couple of days to worry about when it comes to getting your dd to school, I think you'll be ok. But other than the moon boot suggestion, how about tennis racquets strapped to your feet? I jest, of course, but that what I remember seeing in a comic when I was a kid (as much as I hate the snow, it's been falling here (not settling - hurrah!) for the last few hours and has made me nostalgic).

Have you got any walking boots or shoes or wellies with a good grippy sole on?? Fresh snow isn't usually so bad, its when its been there a couple of days that it gets slippy. I think if you slipped and fell, it would be
more likely that you would fall on your bum or side anyway. Wear lots of padded clothing to break any fall.

Get some funky wellies, they look good with jeans or leggings tucked in and I wear mine with a skirt and thick tights too. Mine are black and white and flowery and I think they were only about £10 last yr.

Thanks so much for the suggestions

My trainers have rubbish grips on them, and I've been meaning to buy myself some wellies since we moved in...seven years ago lol so it's my fault for not getting my arse in gear sooner.

Luckily there's just been snow showers so far, so it hasn't settled. Just tomorrow to go

Moon Boots no questions. I have just found out I am expecting after late MC in May and I am wearing mine for the school run today!

MIFLAW · 17/12/2009 14:07

Slow, small steps and keep your weight over your feet so they come down as flat and as fully as possible.

In dry weather we tend to walk in the opposite way, ie long strides, which come down heel first.

Which is ideal for going arse over tit on snow or ice.

At 37 weeks I was having to use a walking pole to keep my balance when out and about, as I also had a nasty trapped sciatic nerve which just sent me reeling at the slightest wrong footing!. You can get basic ones for around £10 from argos I think. Would definately recommend one as it give you something external to lean on - very stable and better than any boots alone. It does mean you are one hand down though in terms of bags etc.

Morloth · 17/12/2009 15:48

Mendle or Raichle hiking boots. They costs a fortune but are worth every cent.

msrisotto · 17/12/2009 15:50

fat fairy steps!

butterscotch · 17/12/2009 17:34

I plan to wear my wellies if it is snowing!!!! CAN DP pop to Tescos or Asda or somewhere and get you some tonihgt? its late night shopping so Debenhams/shoe shops/next etc... might have some? or a gardening centre!

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 17/12/2009 17:44

Good boots, wellies with a good tread. If you have neiither walk on the ide where the snow hasn't been trodden on yet.

maybebaby23 · 17/12/2009 20:31

I was thinking about this thread this afternoon as it has started snowing here! The roads and pavements are LETHAL. DP will be coming out of work in the morning to take DD to nursery and then picking her up and dropping her back home to me afterwards. I only have boots and trainers with rubbish grip! Not risking it as it is her last day and all shopping etc is done so we can stay indoors and watch the snow from now on
