I am 37 w 4d and feel now that DH should be in a fit state to get me to hospital, DS to grandmas and be a good support during the birth..... even though I will prob go over!however with Xmas parties all over am I being a bit mean? Do people's DHs generally stop drinking once you reach term?

I wouldn't impose a complete drinking ban unless he is the only person who can get you to hospital, but I wouldn't want him blottoed if you want him to support you during the birth. You can't get rat-arsed so he should be happy to abstain too!

mistletoekisses · 16/12/2009 14:08

Hadnt thought about it TBH. My view being that if I go into labour during the day - he will be at work (an hour away from home), so I will have to get a taxi to the hospital.

With that in mind, if he wants to have a few drinks...I wouldn't stop him.

Ok agree, I have a DH that works in a very heavy drinking at christmas environment with about 6 different parties on the horizon so makes me a little worried! I won't impose total ban but maybe tipsy rather than rat arsed is the way to go!

I am not planning to ban him from drinking completely, but will get him to cut right down for the last few weeks. It's not like I will be wanting to get to hospital at the first contraction, so he would have a little time to get over a single beer or whatever; but wouldn't want him to have much. If there was a particularly special party planned I might let him have a bit more, but only if I have a backup driver arranged! - and still not to get hammered as I would still want him able to support me once we get there.

My DH wasn't even in the same country when I reached 'term' with my two!!!

And with my second (DD), I drove myself to the hospital and he came in later with DS.

I did have a doula though, and she would have been far more use to me if there had been any crises!!

Well, I'm only 28 weeks, but to my secret delight, DP is booked to have oral surgery on the 19th... which means he'll be on the antibiotics he can't drink on after (not to mention he will probably be in a degree of pain so not really in the mood to go and get rip roarin' drunk).

Yes, I know I'm a bit evil to be glad that if I can't drink for the festive season, neither can he... but misery loves company!

(and as he is out virtually every friday at his local drinking heavily having a few, I really don't feel too awful )

MiniMilk0610 · 16/12/2009 15:28

I'm 37+6 weeks, DP has imposed his own drinking ban!! We went to work christmas party at the weekend, I'd said it was fine for him to drink, had arranged for my mum to have DD etc but he said he wanted to be able to drive, sort out DD & support me so only had 1 drink then stuck to soft drinks for rest of night! (was quite good as well coz meant he wasn't bothered about staying til the end - not sure I'd have managed that without falling asleep!!) he's adamant he's only going to have 1 drink max a day til baby arrives now too, including christmas day, bless!!

Oh yes! when our daughter was born i went into labour during the world cup 2006 when England were knocked out by???
After 10 mins of him thinking i was jokin about my waters breaking, he then spent the next fifteen minutes drinking pints of water trying to sober himself up ( at least he tried)
He was a little glass eyed and as i went through the night in labour he looked worse than me the next morning (if that was possible)

I have warned him this time, NO Drinking at least a week before my due date!

bigpreggybelly · 16/12/2009 16:17

There's always cabs...

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 16/12/2009 16:21

DP was happy to lay off the booze once I was about 36 weeks, and i found that brilliant - i knew that he would always be able to drive me to the hospital should I go into labour (and he was the only person who would have been able to do so)

Yes, I could have taken a cab, but it's a long way and I didn't fancy the idea of labouring in a taxi for 30 miles

natapillar · 16/12/2009 16:24

almost 37weeks and my OH has barely touched alcohol since we found out at 6 weeks! I told him to have a few at Xmas, but I think he is worried the moment he has a pint in hand my waters will break!

MamaLazarou · 16/12/2009 16:28

No way - the poor man hardly goes out any more as we're saving our money, and he doesn't get any action in the marital bed, so drinking at home is his only enjoyment, bless him! He never drinks til he's shitfaced, though, and I'm planning a home birth.

SuziDee · 16/12/2009 17:08

hmmmm seems as though some peoples DHs are good at "moderate drinking"!

I know that we could get a cab but it's more the support in labour I am worried about! Also faffing about trying to get a cab on New Years could be tricky..... due 2nd jan so hoping that baby will come in the remorseful "I'm never drinking again" period

Mama sounds as though that's another good reason for a home birth!

I'm 33 weeks at the minute. We've decided on a 2-3 pints limit from about 36 weeks. That way he'll not be sober enough to drive but me telling him I'm in labour would sober him up enough to be a suitable birth partner.
