Bleed in early pregnancy, is my doctor over-reacting?

My 2nd pregnancy, approx 8 weeks and I went for my first appointment at the GP. I have had a tiny amount of browny/red discharge for the last 3 days. I wasn't worried about it and probably wouldn't have mentioned it except he asked me the question.

He then said I needed to go immediately to have a scan at the hospital that evening. I said I couldn't because of work commitments and I can't go tomorow either. He said he wasn't happy with this and I was going against his advice. He told me if I collapsed or experienced any pain then to call an ambulance!

Is he just playing safe or do I need to start worrying? I suppose he's mostly worried about an ectopic pregnancy? Any words of wisdom/reassurance?

At 8 weeks will I have an abdominal ultrasound or internal?

I would say he is concerned about an ectopic pregnancy, but they are pretty rare (1 in 100 pregnancies) and a bit of blood by itself is reason to get checked, not reason to panic.

Presumably you are going for a scan soon? It is a case of the sooner the better just because if it was ectopic then it is far better to get it sorted before it ruptures.

At 8 weeks at my local hospitals it would be an internal scan.

I'm sure you're fine, but best be certain.

I would agree that he is worried about it being ectopic. If an ectopic pregnancy ruptures then it becomes life-threatening so it's not something you want to risk not knowing about.

Go get the scan as soon as you can - after all, surely you'd like the reassurance too?

At my local hospital at 8 weeks it would be an internal scan but if you've never had one before then they are nothing to worry about I promise.

Good luck and hopefully it's just 'one of those things' and nothing to worry about.

The same thing happened to me but at 5 weeks (I am now 8wks). My GP was a bit more laid back and made an appt at EPU for 2 weeks later, but doctors at the EPU took it all very seriously and scanned me three times straight away until they found something in the right place.
They need to be cautious, ectopic pregnancy is rare but can be dangerous. Although it was stressful and a pain at the time (I even said to everyone at the EPU I wished I hadn't said anything in the first place!) I guess it is reassuring that they take early pregnancy health so seriously - I have friends who have had similar experiences and have been told to go home and stop worrying!
Good luck with your scan

Forgot to say I tried to put off the third scan due to work and had the same conversation - "we can't allow you to delay the scan, this is a very serious matter". Scary but again they are just being cautious...

At 8 weeks ours try abdominal scans first and only do transvaginal if they can't see properly. I had a bleed at 7+4 and they saw the baby abdominally.

Thanks for the advice. I've got a scan the day after tomorrow- there's no way I cannot work as I run my own business. Finger's crossed nothing ruptures before then.
