I had a really rough pregnancy the first time round, and I was wondering if any 2nd (or more!) timers had the same again.

Yes I was sick as a dog with both, 1st one started at 7 weeks wil 20 weeks puking most days and the 2nd one started earlier (5 weeks) but stopped earlier (15 weeks?) but was worse if anything! I was nearly hospitalised with that one, used to down a Dioralite (sp??) before going to sleep and then sleep through which saved me from the hospital I think. Lost 10lbs in 1st three months.

How I coped with that and an 18 month old I don't know - it was hard but you get through somehow. Never again though!!

V bad first time round - in and out of hospital for first four months (more in than out). Quite grim on the whole. Second time (by accident - hadn't quite come to terms with going through that again) - heaps better than the first time. Bad compared to everyone else I knew but relatively speaking better than first time so you never know!

with ds2, it was the summer holidays so dm, had the children at hers while i lay in bed, wasting away, with dd2 i had to cope, the 2 eldest were 13 and 10 so they kind of looked after themselves, but struggled with ds2 who was 2nearly 3 at the time, friend had to look after him as i couldnt get out of bed, oh im so looking forward to spending all summer like that agin!

good friend of mine had this with both pgs, disappeared 10 mins after each c/s

madmarchhare · 28/06/2005 19:17

Do you think its a bit crap if this is one of the main reasons I dont want anymore kids. I dont think anyone I know realises how horrid it was.

OH MY GOD At last someone else to have suffered with hyperemisis. I had this with my 2nd pregnancy. I was first admitted to hosp. at 7wks because I was constantly vomiting. My GP had prescribed various pills to (supposedly) stop me throwing up all the time but nothing worked. The constant nausea never went away. I was in and out of hosp throughout my pregnancy. I have never been so ill as I was with hyperemisis and I have enormous amounts of sympathy for anyone going through it. I was still being sick the day i gave birth at 38wks. I cannot put myself through it again amd the thought of going through it again prevents me from considering another pregnancy.

lucylady · 28/06/2005 20:51

I would just like to add that I was expecting twins and my GP said that was the reason behind my hyperemisis. But after they were born I joined my local twins club eager to talk about it to find I was the only mum to have gone through it.

lou33 · 28/06/2005 20:52

had it with all four of mine, was prescribed meds to combat it

lucylady · 28/06/2005 20:53

did the meds work?

lou33 · 28/06/2005 20:53

yes

lucylady · 28/06/2005 20:55

lucky you, i was given lots of pills and injections but the nausea and vomiting just carried on......

misdee · 28/06/2005 21:19

it hasd put me off having any more kids. everytime so far i have said 'i wont get sick this time, it will be different' but i think dd3 was the worst. i was throwing up so violently that the hospital belive i tore my throat as i was throwing up blood at one point. it really hurt, my throat felt very sore, like it was grazed. even thinking of having another baby makes me feel queasey. i know we cant have another oe for around 5 years if ever, but thinking about the sickness really does put me off.

lucylady · 28/06/2005 21:22

misdee- i was throwing up blood as well but i was told i had torn my stomach lining caused by my constant vomiting.

hannahsaunt · 29/06/2005 09:46

The meds did work but only once I was given ondansetron (?sp) which is a chemotherapy drug; not officially signed off for pregnancy but it's v modern with a v specific action so much less broad spectrum than any of the grim 60s anti-psychotics which have an anti-nausea side-effect and so safe. It was fab and I was able to come off it by 24 weeks. Constipation was a side effect so had lactulose and gaviscon and something else for the oesophageal tear that had come from so much vomiting.

The funny ones that dissolve between your gum and your cheek worked when sick with ds2.

I remember those ones you had to dissolve on your gum. Didnt work for me. My cure for hyperemisis was giving birth....

madmarchhare · 29/06/2005 10:49

lucylady, you sound exactly like I was. I laugh now at the thought that I was expected to take several tablets daily without throwing them up!

mmh- exactly sips of water brought on bouts of vomiting. and they expected me to keep tablets down!! , noone seemed to understand what I was going through. I think hyperemisis can only be fully understood by those who have gone through it.
