5 weeks pg & breasts losing sensitivity. Is it all about to be over...?

In my first PG, which ended in a MMC, my breasts were excrutiatingly sensitive.

In this PG (now at 5+3 based on my last period), they haven't been as unbearably painful- which worried me - but were still noticably bigger and sore in abrusied sort of way.

Today they almost feel normal again.

I had a gut feeling last time I was PG that it had failed, mainly prompted by my breasts starting to be less sensitive. Am now utterly terrified the same is happening again.

Is there anything that can be done to find out if PG is progressing normally?

Has anyone had this happen to them and things then be fine?

Yes, I definitely had days when my tits were sorer than others. One day they were painful to even look at, the next, fine, the day after that, back to painful again. It fluctuated a lot in the early days.

Now (at 34 wks) they are just UNBEARABLY ITCHY! All the time!

I am 26 weeks today.... and had the same worries early on in my pregnancy so I don't think you should assume the worse.

My breasts seemed to have growth spurts, so painful that I couldn't touch them, and then I would have a kind of plateau... and of course would worry that it was all over... but all still good.

I remember reading on here that it isn't uncommon. Hope it's the same for you.

I only had sore (.)(.) for a matter of days and then they were sort of normal again, albeit a bit inflated IYSWIM.
If you have already had a MMC you may be able to get an early scan - call your doctor/midwife and ask about it. I'm not sure how early exactly they will scan you, but I have heard of people having scans at 7 weeks. Obviously they can't guarantee nothing will go wrong after the scan, but they can see whether things are progressing normally at that stage and may be able to advise on your likelihood of encountering problems down the line.

I could have written this post twenty weeks ago!

My first preg also ended in MMC. One of the things I remember is that my breasts were a lot less sore and sort of "deflated" after the 7th or 8th week which is around when it happened.

BUT please don't panic... in my current preg my breasts were sore on and off all through the first trimester. I'd have a few days of soreness then one or two days when they felt fine, then back to sore. They were not unbearably painful either, just enlarged and a bit sore when I pressed them. I was panicky too but I'm now 27 weeks.

Hello Shaggy! Just to say I only had sore boobs in my first pregnancy, then in two subsequent pregnancies they were only sore for a day or two at the very most, if at all. In my last but one pregnancy they didn't get much bigger for ages either, although in this pregnancy they have got huge really quickly (though not painful). I think that your body gets 'used' to the hormones and also reacts differently with each pregnancy, so in my totally un-medical opinion, not having sore boobs doesn't necessarily signal a problem. I think you can often get a scan from 6/7 weeks. In the meantime, try not to be tempted to keep testing! I did that and got paranoid when some days the line wasn't as thick, or strong, but all was fine. I'm just much poorer as a result of spending too much money on pregnancy tests!

Really good luck!

Shaggy I have had two early miscarriages and completely understand your anxiety it really can be overwhelming.

I am currently 6 months pregnant and in the beginning my breasts were only very sensitive the first few days after I tested (to the point where I could barely stand under the shower without wincing) and then the pain gradually disapeared until I really only noticed anything if I really poked hard. That freaked me out.

Then with morning sickness I felt terrible from weeks 7 to 9 and then the sickness gradually began to feel more manageable. You can imagine I completely panicked then as well!

What i have learned from all this is that symptoms do come and go and that breast tenderness is definitely not a guage for whether a pregnancy will be successful or not!

Hang in there and if I were you, I would have an early dating/reassurance scan at 7-8 weeks to ease your mind. We paid for a private scan and it was worth every penny.

Best of luck and you are definitely not alone in feeling these fears!

Thank you all for your replies. It has given me hope.

I am now constantly wearing white knickers and checking every time I go to the loo. Convinced I saw the faintest pink tint yesterday. Every twinge in my stomach is worrying me. Bawled my eyes out this morning and told DH my gut instinct was saying it was over.

The whole thing is horribly unpleasant. I am going to be away at my 8 week point so I am freaking at missing that.

Also, am worrying that if it all does come to an end - please god not on a longhaul flight.

It does help reading your replies though. Am trying to keep sane.

hi well, not sure what to say... 1st preg soreish but nothing spectacular (ended in ectopic). 2nd preg, v sore all way through until 15 weeks... (ds now 2.5!) 3rd preg, v sore until 5weeks then faded (miscarriage), 4th pregnancy same again- sore until 5 weeks then faded BUT now 30 weeks and very much still preggers..... Do really feel for you in the horrible waiting game, it's truly crap. Will have fingers crossed it is all ok.

Walnut8 · 15/12/2009 14:53

I think a lot of us know what you are going through and it's crap. Is there any chance you can book in for a private scan just before you go away, for peace of mind?

teletubby7777 · 15/12/2009 17:22

Shaggy you really sound exactly like I did 6 months ago. I was CONVINCED everything was doomed numerous times. From losing sensation in my breasts to my morning sickness diminishing, to cramps to absolutely every ache and pain spelling doom. It was awful and I was in hysterics more often than not (to the point where I had to see a therapist) but here I am with a healthy baby kicking away inside.

Have you had serial HCG blood tests to confirm that your numbers are doubling? That is a very good sign that things are progressing properly.

There is no need to worry about being away at the 8 week point. Perhaps arange a scan for your return so that you can get the reassurance that all is well....

Hang in there.......xxxxxx
