thrush - what can help?

I'm so itchy it's driving me mad. I can't eat yoghurt as it gives me migraines but have been applying it to the sore area which helps but only briefly. I've started taking the pro biotic tablets but assume they take a while to work. Can I use tea tree oil? before pg I used to put a few drops in the bath or in a small jar of a gentle moisturiser just to try & stop the irritation, haven't used tea tree or lavender in the bath as not sure if safe during pg.

I had terrible thrush last week. Tried all sorts to make it go away but it was becoming so bad that I was worried it would get serious and maybe effect the baby. I eventually talked to my midwife and she got me a prescription for canesten. I was a little worried about it but she, my GP and the chemist were really reassuring about it. Two days later, I am thrush free...free of the agony! If you don't want to go down that road, I'm not sure really but good luck, it really is horrible.

try to see a homeopath. my sis is preg and i looked in one of my homeopathy and pregnancy books and found she could take pulsatilla. it worked a treat and was gone the next day!!

kkfairybrains · 14/12/2009 21:38

im pg also and am suffering alot from thrush and i just use canesten cream that u buy over the counter and it works for me.have been advised loads that its safe 2 as i was worried about using it but it really relieves it.i dont know what else you can use but maybe you could go to a health food shop and ask them or chinese therapy.hope you get some relief soon!

ReindeerRusso · 14/12/2009 22:50

Agree, canesten cream is fine, just not pessaries or pills. And it helps a lot.

marthamay · 14/12/2009 23:06

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I got a prescription (instead of over the counter) for the canesten because then it's free.

LaTristesse · 15/12/2009 09:11

I've been having the same problem on and off throughout my pregnancy. I didn't get any relief from the Canesten cream but I have found tea tree oil worked well - a few drops in the bath, as well as applying some diluted in cool water to the affected area a couple of times a day using a cotton wool pad. Combine this with not using soaps etc and it clears up nicely.
Good luck, it is horrible!

See your GP for something. Boots refused to sell me anything other than cream so I wouldn't bother going there. I think sometimes it is higher up and you will need a pessary or a course of pessaries. But your GP will know what is safe to use.

roundabout1 · 15/12/2009 09:58

Thanks for your replies, have had a bath this morning with a few drops of tea tree & it has helped a bit. Have managed to get a gp appointment for later over something else - feel like I'm falling apart at the moment! so will hopefully get something then.

My midwife told me yesterday that pessaries are safe to use, just not the tablets and that she'd happily write me a prescription if the cream didn't work.

Tomatefarcie · 15/12/2009 10:49

I feel for you. I have it at the moment, and it's driving me mad.

Used a pessary last night, that I had left from the previous course of Canesten , but still feel a bit tender down there.

Am off to get Actimel, apparently it helps to drink it every morning.

I need to get it sorted out quickly, I can;'t imagine what it would be like to give birth like this!

first1 · 15/12/2009 14:10

I've had it a couple of times already and I'm only 18weeks and its horrible, so lots of sympathy coming your way! Doc gave me a prescription for pessaries and MW agreed they're absolutely fine to take. Though I've been told if I get symptoms again to have a swab taken. My mum told me smear yoghurt in there but that idea freaked me out a little! Stick to creams and pessaries!

BevCred · 15/12/2009 15:49

i really know how you feel...i have had it for almost 6 weeks now! I have tried everything natural - even a clove of garlic put in there (not to be advised after the burning it caused!). Been back and forth to the docs and onto my 4th pessary so fingers crossed this one works this time as its driving me insane!!! Only 2 weeks to go for me now until baby arrives and the thought of having this thrush along with the pain and discomfort after giving birth not to mention if i need stitches down there is making my toes curl...ouchy!

Hope you get rid of it soon..and hope i do too!

charzie · 15/12/2009 17:07

canesten cream works a treat and is safe doctor has prescribeb me twice in my pregnancy.

fiziwizzle · 15/12/2009 17:30

It's safe to use both cream and pessaries in pregnancy, just not the oral pill.

I've had constant thrush, my doctor last time tried a different cream, Gyno-Daktarin which my DP helpfully pointed out is also used for athletes foot . It stung, but did work, you could ask for that if the Canesten isn't cutting it (I think I have worked up an immunity to Canesten now).

I've tried yoghurt (eating and applying locally) and tea tree and neither seems to work for me .

FelicityMary · 16/12/2009 22:16

I used a pessary (the one which you have to use over three nights) and cream which i was prescribed by my doctor which helped get rid of it, but as it was an recurring problem, so I looked up on boots ideas, and they sell something called 'Bio-fem' which is a gel to stop you getting thrush in the first place. Been only using it for a week, but normally would have thrush back by now, but don't so very pleased. I read all the leaflet and it stated it was fine for use during pregnancy (though you can of course double check this for yourself).

bigpreggybelly · 17/12/2009 09:23

Its also worth avoiding using soap down there in the shower and using Femfresh or something similar specially made for the fanjo. I think that helps avoid it returning.

zazen · 17/12/2009 09:41

You can use diluted vinegar as a kindof douche. It changes the acidity of your fanjo and inhibits the yeast growth.

Interesting about pulsitilla as a homeopathic remedy for it.
