Swollen Hands and Feet

My hands and especially feet have swollen so much they look like elephants' feet. I'm 35 weeks pregnant. My feet hadn't swollen so much last week when GP took my blood pressure but it was ok then.

Its now getting painful to walk and I was wondering if there's anything I can do? Cheers.

If they have swollen up suddenly it's probably worth getting your BP checked again. Maybe ring your GP or midwife and tell them. Best to be safe. In terms of what to do I will be watching this thread with interest as my ankles are like tree trunks now!

I'm really swollen BP is fine but feet, anlkes, knees, hands and wrists are all huge!! Socks dig in, have to squeeze my feet into shoes, rings don't fit anymore and nor do my watches!! I finished work early as i at first it was just my ankles so i thought it was due to being on my feet, but now they tend to come up over night so just have to live with it!!!

You need to get your bp checked asap. pre-eclampsia can come on very quickly.

The other sympthoms include
As pre-eclampsia develops, it can cause fluid retention (oedema). This can cause sudden swelling of your feet, ankles, face, and hands.

Oedema is another common symptom of pregnancy, but it tends to be in the lower parts of your body, such as your feet and ankles, and will gradually build up during the day. If the swelling is sudden and, particularly if it affects your face and hands, it could be a symptom of pre-eclampsia.

As the condition progresses, your may also experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • severe headaches,
  • vision problems, such as blurring, or seeing flashing lights before your eyes,
  • pain in your upper abdomen (just below your ribs),
  • vomiting,
  • excessive weight gain due to fluid retention, or
  • feeling generally unwell.

The doctors will ned to do blood teasts on your platelets and liver function as well.

Please get checked out regularly, hope there is nothing to worry about.

My socks are digging in too. I was hoping this would decrease as I gave up work on Friday.

This is really not a good bit of pregnancy. I'm now getting to the stage of muttering - be 2 weeks early please!!!!! Highly unlikely with a first baby.

You need to have your bp checked asap. Please call your midwife.

Ok thanks for the advice I'll give my MW a call.

Hi,

Sorry to but in on your thread Liskey.

I am 25 weeks and my nose has started to spread across my face! This happened with DD1 but in the last 2 weeks, my BP was always fine though. This time I have had one midwife appt so only had BP checked and at 16 weeks. Should I be worried?

The last time my lips ended up looking like Angelina Jolie, but was not a good look along with the massive nose!

i was joking about it this morning but after reading this maybe I should get checked?

I had this when I was pg with dd and am just starting to feel my feet go now (33 weeks)

The only thing I could do with dd was to put my feet up as much as poss. I managed to get my feet down to a fairly good size, then had 2 days of shopping and was back to Shrek feet.

I had to wear DP's flip flops!!

My bp was slightly up for a few weeks with dd but nothing major. Unfortunatly it can be just one of those great things pregnancy brings! Best to be safer then sorry and get it checked though.

Good luck

I agree with everyone about seeing your GP but also, drink lots of water.

I know it's the last thing you want to do as you're probably up and down to the loo constantly anyway, but it does 'flush out' the build up of fluid. Worked for me anyway!
