Hi

I am probably thinking about this a bit early but...

Starting to look a pushchairs on the 'tinternet and though I love the look of bugaboos/bees there is no way we can afford one.

So can you lovely ladies on MN give me any ideas for alternatives. Basically I hope to get:

  • Facing forward and back
  • Needs to fold up as small as poss as we only have a 2 bed flat so not much space to store.
  • I don't really use public transport as walk everywhere or drive long distance so not fussed about manoverability on buses etc but it seems obvious - it needs to be good to walk with.

I know loads of people want the whole 'pram thing' esp. with first but speaking as someone who is now on her 'third pram/buggy' thing I honestly have to say my McClaren has been by far and away the best. If you get a Techno XT it will cost you about £150, will go flat for your newborn and in about 4 months when your baby wants to sit up it will do you right through to walking properly. I went for the smallest M&P thing first off - pliko pramette cos in a flat too and after 4 months I couldn't bear it anymore and had bought a McClaren. Pramette is still staring at me as I type and I must get round to putting it on gumtree as it's in near perfect condition....

I lot of people I know with bugaboos, quinnys and phil and teds have done what jojo says. But I'm still using my loola up at 9mo. Now it could be that these people have cash to spare, hence expensive first pushchair and money to buy second. Or it could be that some of their prams won't even fit in their car boots without taking the wheels off. But mine does me fine, as I don't need to use public transport, and it is easy to fold up to go into the car, especially in two pieces.

I really wanted a pram attachment for my newborn, as they look so much more cosy and you can wrap them up with blankets "properly". But then I had an early March baby.

I've got an icandy cherry, it's about the smallest folding and lightest quality buggy on the market. It forwrad and rear faces, you'll need to buy a cot for the baby though. It costs about £100 less than a bee and the seat is far larger, colours are plain, smart and hard wearing, check out the dark grape colour. It's really robust, glad I didn't buy a bee it would be far too small for DS now. best of luck.

We have Mamas and Papas Pliko Switch - got it in the sale this time last year for £190 (after months of looking on internet and almost paying £600 for the Bugaboo).

It faces back and front, pretty light and DS (11 months) still likes facing backward. My mum hates it as she says it is a nightmare to steer but I haven't had any problems.

Don't think this model is still available but they will have an equivalent.

Mamas and Papas sale is great, also got nursery furniture - wouldn't recommend paying full price for the stuff, though.

Another vote for icandy cherry - I LOVE mine it is fab, used the carrycot til about 5 months and then the seat unit - DD is now 19 months and I still find it very very light to push, turns on a penny and can face either way - really really useful to be able to clip the maxicosi carseat on too

3 other friends have since got one after trying mine, is the 2nd buggy for one friend and the 3rd for the other 2 and their children are all under 20 months! - can't recommend it highly enough!

Where's the best place to buy the iCandy? I'm struggling to find one

carrielou2007 · 17/12/2009 13:51

The pushchair shed is in products section, there is a pushchair section - we love our prams and have pretty much had everything you can imagine

difficultdecision · 18/12/2009 13:32

icandy not available on line - John lewis is the best place IMO

heliotrope · 18/12/2009 14:18

As a bugaboo alternative I would look at the Hauck Infinity. I had the red one with carrycot - it is similar in style to the bugaboo.
It has done me really well from birth (with carrycot for about 3-4 months) then with the pushchair (first facing, then turned around). My DS is 2.5 and still uses it - it is especially comfy for sleeps as tips right back.
New baby due next year so planning for it to stay in service and get a bit more use out of hte carry cot (which incidentially you can also use as a moses basket round the house or when staying over somewhere).
Only downside is it is similar size as bugaboo (but all the ones with proper carry cots seem to be fairly chunky). We did get a cheap stroller later on as get lots of buses / trains and sometimes I need to lift the whole thing with him in it! But still love the Hauck best. I found virtually everyone I know ended up buying a McClaren pushchair by about 9-12 months.
Another piece of advice while I'm in full flow - don't bother with the sun shades, they are a waste of time as you keep turning corners. Instead get a Rayshade from kiddipotamus - gives proper sun protection.

tethersjinglebellend · 18/12/2009 14:38

If you want the bugaboo bee, get the bugaboo bee.

I promise you, you will only end up buying it anyway when the baby is about 3 moths old. I got a bugaboo cam from ebay- in parts, I assembled it myself and -the key point- bought new covers. Anything that touches the baby is then brand spanking new.

If you buy what you don't really want now, it will be a false economy IMO

tethersjinglebellend · 18/12/2009 15:35

Having said that, the Oyster looks fab and has a pram/carrycot attachment and a rear/forward facing seat unit- it also folds very flat.

Not sure you should be bumping old threads just to advertise. Have reported.

Loubilouu this is an old thread (from 2009) that was bumped for some advertising. I should think the OP has got her pushchair by now!

happycamel · 09/02/2011 16:45

I've got an iCandy Cherry, it's small, lightweight and faces backwards and forwards.

DirtyBit · 09/02/2011 20:29

I saw this yesterday, which I would have probably got if I hadn't already bought a pram in Jan.
