How early can you go for an early dating scan?

I did a test today - and I'm pregnant! But I really have NO idea how pregnant. Haven't had a period since getting pregnant with my last baby (now 9 months)... so have no LMP to go on, and I don't know which, erm, particular night of passion might have done the trick...

So if I walked into my EPU centre tomorrow, would they bother scanning me if I could be as early as 2 or 3 weeks? I had an early dating scan with my last pregnancy (again, because I had no clue about LMP - ended up being 9 weeks by that dating scan).

So should I bother going tomorrow, or if I'm really not very pregnant at all (i.e. 2 or 3 weeks) is there no point as they won't be able to see anything? Or can they always see SOMETHING IYSWIM.

Or should I buy one of those expensive pregnancy tests that tell you how pregnant you are. How far along can they detect?

Boring post - will be really pleased if anyone replies at all.

No, they will not be able to see anything so early.
The clearblue tests tell you in aprox weeks how far you are.

I had a private one (at a hosp though) with my first baby, and they wouldn't see me until 7 weeks.

With my youngest I had a scan at 6+5.

Can you just walk in to an EPU and ask to be scanned?

MrsHappy · 10/12/2009 19:42

I've had a scan at 4+4 (18 days from conception) and they could see the pregnancy, although I suspect I lucked out in that a very good consultant did the scan.

I'd try a clearblue test first, and if it says 3+ weeks, try to get a scan.

sunburntats · 10/12/2009 19:43

You can walk in and ask but they are very likely to refuse to scan until at least 6 weeks, even then its not very accurate.

Congratulations but bear in mind if you're much further along I don't think a pregnancy test would work as the hormone starts to drop again after so many weeks but I could be wrong. It's just something I heard.

Thanks all - will get one of those clearblue ones tomorrow then.

Cheers all.

Hi there - I had a scan at 5 weeks, but an internal one with the probe thing (absolutely fine by the way, I know other people here have worried about having them but it didn't bother me one bit... and I am sometimes uncomfortable with these things) and they could see the little heartbeat... but they told me they didn't like to actually correctly date until around 10 weeks (this was in France though). Why don't you wait another couple of weeks so at least you would be a bit further along and they should be able to see something and suggest at what point after that they could date?

first1 · 11/12/2009 08:52

I had an internal scan too without a hiccup. Really, if you do have one, it's fine! I had mine at 6+5 and they saw heartbeat, sac and everything else they needed to. But my friend went at 6+1 and they couldnn't see much. Waiting a few days really can make all the difference. Congrats!

Lunaticfringe - are you booked in for another scan? I have a scan at 4+5 and they could see the fetal pole and yolk sac but not much more.

hazeyjane · 11/12/2009 15:02

I have recently found out I was pregnant, but my cycle is so long I thought I was having an early menopause!. I was scanned early (due to having had a previous molar pregnancy), and was told I was about 5 weeks, it was an internal scan and they could just make out a fetal pole and sac. I waited 2 weeks to have another scan which showed me to be about 8 and 1/2 weeks (which would mean i would have conceived at a completely impossible time of my erratic cycle!). I think they prefer to scan around 6 -8 weeks if possible.
